I was just looking at some of the bits on Thunderbird 5, mainly because Im trying to work out what the copper coloured tube is, noticed that theyve used at least 8 grills from the vickers vigor, 4 on each side, count the ribs

its probably been pointed out before, but its the first time Ive noticed it.

also does anyone know what the white fencing is from?

so they had at least 8 vickers vigors at 1 time

thatll be 2 for the recovery vehicles.
1 for the mole
1 for the firefly
1 for the explosives truck/transmitter truck
1 for the restraining unit/excavator
1 for the half track

and 1 other, probably the 1 that got blew up in end of the road.

Mike I think the railings are from Faller, but they could equally be from Airfix?

Fantastic find, its so obvious they are from the vickers. their are qiet a few parts I have identified, from the airfix bridge , overhead gantry FRS1 , dock yard crain Revel Nike ajax, Corpral missile, and airfix windmill the round coil is from a heating element, this is according to Erick Backman, who was one of the model team who built this model.Oh also the Revel 1 48 scale gemini.

Great, that round section is the one thing that has stopped me building a replica

same here, just had a quick pop round to a local vw parts shop

its definatley that arund 6 for the 2 lengths the smaller is what I need for the fire engine.

what a nice change that something isnt rare, hard to find or expensive

its like a dull cardboard/paper, quite stiff but bendy, they do do aluminium in specialist shops, but this will be better as paint will stick to it better. and would have been easy to glue onto the models and sets, I just knew it wouldnt be metal.

Great find Mike, Will you be using anything to re-enforce it? I think that stuff can be pretty fragile.

its really tough ya know, hard to squeeze and puncture

Mike

Thunderbird 5 hung up in the workshop

now just find me 8 vickers vigors

ok we're not going to get them, but at least measurements of the part or a cast would ensure the main dimensons are right.

cant see me building a model of this soon, its far too big and have got other favourites to do, although when it comes to thunderbird 3, Ive always wanted one the same scale as tb5. so they can go together.

Ill collect the bits for the future.

Ill tear whats left of my hair out trying to find the tubs on the roof, and those silver plastic tubs (behind the no5) if I start looking too hard at this

Does anyone have decent copies of Thunderbird 5 profile shots they could share please?

also, the other TB5 thread I started has been moved to the AMC area and I cant access it, Ive not got Paypal.

Mike
I've got some in the Japanese pink Thunderbirds book, I'll try and scan them later tonight, but they're a bit small I'm afraid - I don't know how useful they'll be....

Oddly enough I tried posting onto the other thread as well, but with no luck... and I HAVE got AMC membership.... strange.

I was just going to put this up, in case anyone is interested:

From Faller's trusty old B-905 Skyscraper kit, just to add to the list of bits.

brilliant Keith, didnt know about that kit

was it used anywhere else in Thunderbirds?

would like to see some other pics of that kit

sorry should have googled a bit before I replied, I think I remember you mentioning that before, and I think they used those sky scraper kits as intended in background scenes.

Mike, I have these shots, hope they help you.

These helped me a lot when I did a CG build of TB5 6 years ago ( one of these days I'll finally get around to texturing it properly ;P )

sure do, brilliant

lovely your 3d model too!

I would never have known without the underneath shot that the side part (whats it called) is not parallel.

although Im having my reservations over the vickers vicker grill now Ive seen those shots.

I saw my dad the other day and he saw I had the large diameter tube, and he said whats that for? showed him and he said wow you should do tb5 I liked it as a kid! I wasnt expecting it so may do it even though itd be huge, wouldnt even be able to put it in the loft! haha.

although Id want to find out what the other bits are, Id even try and find the clear plastic bowl on the roof!

Ive never really studied it hard enough, going to try and work out some of the bits...

the bottom red part under the no 5 looks like its a kit part.
and maybe the other red parts???

the things that sleeve over the gold painted tube too

Glad to be of service Mike!

I went through my files and this is as far as I've got texturing my TB5, still a ways to go.

With TB5, there are a couple of versions of the bottom antenna ( it must have been prone to breaking off )

I have some scans from a Japanese guide book of Airfix girder bridge, travelling crane and hovercraft parts that may be of use, will post later.

I was given the scan of TB5 from a very kind gentleman in the Netherlands named Albert Kiefer. I believe he got it from Theo de Klerk.

Thanks for the kind words on the CG TB5. When I get some time, I'll finish her up and make some desktop wallpapers available to all here.

off topic, but theres another question which I think Ill just have to ask, its..

have you got profiles of the other thunderbirds too?

the main circular body part of thunderbird 5 reminds me of a very large frying pan. although we talking 17 inches diameter! quick rough mesurement.
its a tricky shape to make, could it be something they got hold of?

Yes, they used a lot of them build almost 'out of the box' as background buildings, as well as in various combinations and for detail parts. A very popular kit, which is a bit of a shame, as they don't turn up very often nowadays. It's one I really wish Faller would re-issue.....
and as has been pointed out before, they're all over the 2001 A Space Odyssey miniatures, props, and full size sets (my main area of interest).

Keith, when you next get a chance, would you be able to post a photo of all the kit bits out of it? just 1 or 2 shots of the whole kit spread out.

many thanks

No problem Mike. A lot of the parts are just multiples, so there aren't all that many different bits.

ahh thats ok if theyre all the same bits, just want to see if any of the bits where used on other things.

looks like they used revell atlas kit parts behind the large coil.

but that red kit piece has me bugged.

and what looks like an upturned bowl on the roof with 4 legs is 5" diameter.

VW beetles have a 50mm rubber grommet for the pre heater hose.

It looks like what the top ariel sits on, the dimensions match up....

Captanapollo, any chance of some shots of the pieces youve identified?

what kit is the overhead gantry frs1?

cheers
