Default Online Poll

There is a an ongoing cyber poll trying to find out the most popular TV shows ever (or at least those with the most active fan bases). This was posted over on Online Alpha a few weeks ago and I posted this same note on Space 1999 Net forum yesterday. (Hi Martin!!... darn, still need that ninja emoticon) Since then, there has been quite the jump in write-in votes for Space 1999... from a humble 67 up to respectable 423 (as of yesterday, and we beat ALF by one vote!).

You can vote once an hour, and ballot box stuffing is encouraged. The few top shows count votes in the tens of thousands, but most of the rest are numbered in hundreds of just a few thousand.

It takes only a moment to vote. Just type in Space: 1999 and click vote.

(Interestingly, UFO has only 10 votes as of yesterday, but that's up from 2 last week....)

Cleopatra 2525 is on the ballot?! Really, how many people have even heard of that show, let alone suffer--um, watched it?

Oh, and just for a little side rant:
Space: Above & Beyond? I hate hate hated that show. Could have been interesting (Earth on the losing side of an interstellar war, struggling to fight back), but instead it fell in to the same stereotypical "misifts becoming a cohesive fighting unit and kickin' a**" load of crud. Wildly inconsistent with its characters (let's mourn the death of one of our comrades, because he was introduced by name early in the pilot, but not the others who died left & right in the same pilot, for example). Oh, and don't even get me started about how pretty all the supposed "Marines" looked, with their made-for-tv looks and trendy LONG HAIR. I don't know of any regular military organisations that allow long hair, but it certainly isn't the Marines!

The count has really jumped! Up to 519 today. We leaped past The Protectors at 502 and even inched ahead of Sapphire and Steel at 513. Not shabby for a show that counted 67 measley votes a mere two weeks ago.

Next goal.. to surpass Thomas the Tank Engine currently at 531 (What can I say? A favorite with the kiddies... and I can proudly claim to know each engine by color and number. So there.), and maybe even Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea at 580.

I see Alias is pretty high on the list. It's the "no-aliens but still a big bad government spy" version of The X Files. OK, I know that's not really accurate, but JEEZ, I'm sick of conspiracy and/or "spy/counterspy/counter-counterspy" tv shows. That and back-stabbing "reality" programs.
You know what's weird? I see things like Flight 29 Down (a teenage version of Lost that does a decent enough job of showing people overcoming terrible odds and (gasp) actually working together to survive, all while being somewhat entertaining) and wonder why adult programming is so freakin' mean-spirited. Sure, art reflects life to some degree, but sheesh! How about just a hint of optimism once in a great while, some loftier goal perhaps? Even Space: 1999 had that! If there really are aliens observing our tv programs, they've probably slapped a galactic quarantine on our planet for the next several epochs.

I'm so throwing my tv away... oh wait, I need it to watch my Space: 1999 dvds.

Making progress. 598 votes as of today. Next target to leapfrog... Forever Knight at 674.

Keeping tossing in those votes!!

(Sorry, the entire Xena thing has me mystified, too. Just don't get it, I'm afraid. )

Update time! (Can't you tell I love these silly polls? It's somehow very satisfying to see our show climb past more recent and popular ones.)

Now at 818 votes and have passed such shows as the original Dark Shadows, Forever Knight and Lost. Unfortunately, the momentum has slowed significantly.

BUT...

A thousand votes is not unrealistic since S99 started at a measly 67 votes less than a month ago. So... if you have a chance, visit the link and type in Space 1999 and click vote. Any bunch of guys who can make Eagles as well as this lot can, can do this!!

(and no, despite the evidence above, I was never a cheerleader. )

OOO! I see The Tripods is on the list, with only one vote. I might have to vote for that one just once... Have to wait an hour, though, since I just cast another vote for S:99.

I liked that show a lot, but never did find out how it ended. I seem to recall reading somewhere once that the ending was never filmed. Anyhow, the memory of those creepy long-legged aliens and the skull caps still lingers.

The Tripods, series one was released on DVD a year or two back at least on Region 2, but I have not seen series two 'The City of Gold and Lead' as of yet, of course unless I missed it that is, and the BBC never filmed the third part of the trilogy, so project was never completed.
