Default Hydrofoil Rescue/Patrol boat from Thunderbirds

Ive managed to source one of the toy boats that this was based on

http://madmalc.screaming.net/1960.htm

and yep it will be made into a replica will post pics soon

not just saying it, but it was a favourite, I always thought it looked great as it skimmed along the water, but in reality it was getting dragged along by something underneath which is visible sometimes.

I always loved the shots of it in operation crash dive as it stops turns round and raises up.

now I cant see any bits on it, apart from the white fencing that is seen on Thunderbird 5 and the Thunderbirds pens, which I still cant find

I think on its roof it has a life ring from the amphicar toy I have

the white box on the rear I think could be the battery case from it.

I think its had a door cut into the right hand side behind the front windows.

all the arials and gubbins on the roof are probably wire, doesnt appear to be any kit parts stuck on,apart from ripmax vents, could really do with some hd screengrabs.

not sure that it has actual hydrofoils underneath, I think the arms are dummy and its clamped to something underneath, Ill probably make replica hydrofoils as if it where real, but would need some advice on that.

I prefer it with the Rescue markings. although would proabably be more apt to do it as the man from mi5 version as its part of the story.

now am I imagining this, or did it appear on the cover of tv21? if so does anyone have the shot?

and theres a cracking shot of Brian Johnson holding this in a behind the scenes shot, does anyone have a good quality copy of that please?

cheers

Mike

Some pics of the real thing which I have been on.

The owner, Wensley Haydon-Baille also owns the two large SR.N4 hovercraft stored at the Hovercraft Museum...

Brilliant, great to see info on the real one.

the model was also seen in Captain Scarlet without its hydrofoils in renegade rocket. only the distance shot model, the close up model that major reeves falls out of is a larger scale replica.

it also appears in the background of a few shots in model spy, along with the larger model.

Mike

pic of the boat with battery case removed and top of that placed on rear, also the life ring from the amphicar toy, I think the front struts may be made from hawk husky helicopter parts, the middle wider parts may be from the starfighter?

Mike

snapshot of it in the dark in the man from mi5, just trying to see if I can make out any of the ariel gubbings on the roof. quite hard with it being dark.

looks cool in the footage tho

I may even try and make the boat radio controlled one day with the hydrofoils

always fancied an rc boat

but thatd be a lot of work and a long way off, would take a lot of research into motors etc, for now the plan is to make it look like the studio model

Yet another thread i'm going to pay rapt attention to! The RC version sounds awesome, when I finally get my act together I will get the air-sea rescue jet under way and finished...we could botch some photoshop pictures of them together.

Mike Delamar - Nice boat project you have planned. I think you should give more consideration to your thoughts about making it an RC model before getting too involved with the rest of it?

thanks guys,

lee, having it rc would be a big job, I havent got time or funds at the moment, the fact that it already has brass propellors and was designed to work could make it easier, after all, this isnt a big job, its just some extra ripmax bits stuck on, decals, paintjob and some false hydrofoils for now, they could always be taken off and replaced later with something that would work.

for the front hydrofoils Im thinking on using the rotars from the husky helicopter, as they look about right, and Ive got plenty spare that wont be used, but as its going to be sitting on a table or plinth or whatever, Id like to put false hydrofoils on underneath so need some suggestions on what they should look like.

Adama, screengrabs are fantastic!
when time allows, is it possible for some more, when its a bit nearer the camera, trying to see the arial detail on the roof.
sorry for being cheeky.

ferahgo,
air sea rescue jet would look cool alongside, already got 2 b58 tail fins for the wings so maybe one day

Which B58 and starfighter would be used? I suppose any 1/32 Starfighter would do? You know I have one B-58 but it is the right size? (If you ask me it was silly to have the same pic on all the boxes...that are the same size...)

ahhh just spotted, thought it had a door cut into the right hand side, which I thought was strange as theres already a door next to it,above the U on the right hand side,
its a grey ripmax funnel vent, can see it better on the left hand side, they used to be grey but theyre only available white with red innerds now.
theres a few different sized ones on the rear ,and it looks like on the top it has 2 small ripmax searchlights sticking out at an angle on the painted glazed top level windscreen, can see those best on the head on shot.

going to try and find a nice light yellow for this, I think captanapollos holts yellow glow on his msp looks right, but cant find that over here in halfords, wondering what car it was for?

most of the ripmax pieces are identified, available now from reade models. the white ariels appear to be made up from jackstaffs.

and just wondering on the RESCUE font. dont think its grotesque 9

cheers

note on the pic of the coastal patrol colours, and underneath what appears to be some pieces of wood with a coach bolt through it, usually id try and get as close to the original studio model but wont go that far

Would that be part of the movement mechanism? I always found this boat interesting, its a nice streamlined design

Hi Mike, don't know if this'll help or not, 1/72 scale.

The lettering looks like std Helvetica bold for 'Rescue' and Helvetica extended for 'Coastal Patrol'.

The "R" is different in Helvetica. It's possibly Arial bold.
