Default My first FX shot

Here is my first special effect shot, from about 1976. I don't remember what the story was, exactly -- but the ship is a tanker and the base is some lonely outpost on another planet. I'm not sure where all the parts came from, but there are plastic Dixie cups, spoons, ping pong balls and part of a Klingon Battle Cruiser kit in it. The photo was a Polaroid, so there is no negative to get a better image from, unfortunately.

Well, the fact that it is a really beat-up, dirty, decaying picture helps the effect.

The oval-ish dome on the big building was the base for a fiber-optic lamp.

That's cool. The cotton looks great -- I had assumed it was an actual photo of a nebula at first glance. The model is cool, too -- of course.

It's a small disposible paper cup, approximately 5 cm tall, and maybe 3 cm across. They come stacked in counts of 25 to 50 and are usually to be found in bathrooms for that quick, middle of the night drink of water. And they are frequently decorated with the latest cartoon fad. Case in point... the ones with Disney 'Cars' characters my son brought home from the inlaws over Christmas.

Dixie cups are just little plastic drinking cups that come in a stack. The far left tower in the picture is made from Dixie cups stacked up with every other one inverted -- with half of a ping pong ball on top.

My sister and I had a play area behind the machine shed on our farm when we were kids (she's three years older). For a couple of years in the mid-seventies, we'd play with my Eagle models and make up Space: 1999 stories back there. I built a whole city of Dixie cup towers. There was also a landing pad and some kind of terrarium dome I scavenged. I still go back there now and then, but all that's left is a bit of the landing pad and shards of plastic from the cups.

Default dixie cup 2

Thanks guys,
I always thought that they were some sort of special shape with a Confederate flag or some other reference on them (Travis Tritt song “Country Club” , “ I do my drinking from a Dixie cup”)

so just normal disposable plastic cups then
we live and learn

Thanks again and now back to the real topic
