Default Watching Space 1999 for the first time

I am hugely excited. A very kind forum member has loaned me the DVDs of the series (1 & 2) and so I will finally get to see the eagles flying FOR REAL and not just around my study.... Sad to think that I had to wait till I was 42 to get the chance. I shall glue the children to some seats (actually I won't have to they'll sit there spell bound ...they'd happily watch the test pattern) and we'll see how we go.

They do wear fairly tight costumes....

Remember, start with Season 1!
You might want to stop with Season 1 as well, but that's just me!

Honestly I would be happy if there would be a DVD with only the Eagle scenes on. I've not managed to watch all the DVD's so far. The pace of the story is just too boring

Without the Eagles, I would never have watched more then episode 1 ...

Oh good.... Well, when I've seen one I'll let everyone know how I get on. Rather glad I have read about how dreadful it is, nothing worse than expectations dashed... now I'm just looking forward to a good laugh and ...well... and those eagles. BTW I have just noticed on the 1st season DVD covers that they have enormous zips up their sleeves to their collars, those poor actors....looks like a throw back to Captain Scarlet only much less comfortable.

I have watched ep 1. Its very cool....the Eagles are great!!!!!!!!!!! The music is Thunderbirds (they obviously never learned to play anything else) and those costumes have those great zipper things ...I loved it, with a huge cringe factor and I want to see more eagles. Is this the only episode where Alan Carter doesn't crash and eagle??? ...and fancy Scott Tracey being the pilot of the Commander's eagle and TB1. On to the next one!!!

To be fair, Season 1 had its share of bad episodes, too. Just remember to keep an open mind and don't expect all questions to be answered by the end of each episode... but by the end of the season, you may have a general sense of higher purpose for the Alphans' journey, which makes the overall picture a little more interesting.

Oh, plus by then you'll have seen lots of Eagles!

End of Eternity has a bit of violence, too. Really, there is a lot of violence -- as in fist fights and stuff like that in many episodes. But the biplane attack in End of Eternity is somewhat bloody.

And, no... unfortunately, not THAT kind of biplane attack.

All very good advice actually. The kids are seasoned Trek fans and we make sure we watch what they want before for they do so that we avoid the nightmares

I think they can watch eps 1-3 safely enough. I liked eps 3 especially, though I am not sure why they called it a black sun instead of a black hole. Is there a difference? (one for our astronomers)

Don't forget the end of "Death's Other Dominion." Very greusome.
By the way, I saw all of Season 1 first run when I was 7 & 8, and I turned out OK. (Really, I'm OK. What are you all snickering at?)

As for the question about "black sun" versus "black hole," I believe the term "black hole" wasn't as commonplace then as it is nowdays. Granted, I don't think "black sun" (or "black star," or "dark star") was ever very common, either, but perhaps the writer favored it over "black hole."

I'm pretty sure Martin Willey mentioned something about it at his site, The Catacombs.

Tony,

Just keep in mind that the Eagle and some other spaceship WILL BE in every single episode.

That little piece of advice may just help tremendously the more episodes you watch.

Well, every episode except for "Force of Life" and "The Troubled Spirit." But yeah, every OTHER episode. Don't skip them just 'cause they lack Eagles, though!
Oh, and I'm issuing another 'greusome warning' for both of these.

There is some delicious irony in the 1st ep when Koenig says "we're sitting on the biggest bomb man's ever made." Made me want to change my signature, which I did...a bit harsh really, the programme's not that bad at all. My kids can't cope with all the Thunderbird music, but they love the eagles. Over all, considering everything...very cool so far.

I'm an unapologetic series one fan. I even really like Full Circle. I saw the series first when I was 10 and do admit to watching a fair amount of the scenes cowering from behind my parent's sofa. I loved it. I will add my cautions for the very conclusion of Death's Other Dominion and just about all of Dragon's Domain. I haven't let my 8 year old watch those yet. Series two is high camp, but I watched it all and have fond memories of the hours spent lost in the Alphan Universe.

Yes. Reading through the first year scripts there are some ones I am really looking forward to. The run and hide method is the best way to watch them..our kids are great at it ...and so am I...still. Gotta love those eagles though.

Balor rules!!

Besides the guy with the biplane had an annoying "I'm cool, honest" type of voice. Just a pity the Commander was taken unawares...
