Default Blade Runner - The Final Cut

*
Following the shooting of new footage, Blade Runner - 'The Final Cut' is set for an Autumn 2007 release. It may even hit the theatres.

"...Later in 2007, to celebrate the film's 25th anniversary, the studio will unveil "Blade Runner: The Final Cut," Scott's definitive new version of his science-fiction masterpiece. The film will be released theatrically in select major U.S. cities, followed by a multi-disc Special Edition DVD release which will also contain three alternate versions of Blade Runner: the Original U.S. Theatrical Cut, the Expanded International Theatrical Cut and the 1992 Director's Cut. Ample, ground-breaking bonus features will also be included..."

Well, that's great! All the most important versions in one set. I'm buying it!

Well, color me not so impressed. Blade Runner was one of the most expensive films ever made at the time of its release. He could have done it any way he liked when he first made the movie. I wish he'd stop screwing around with it. If he wants to revisit that world in a new movie, I'm all for that. But what is with continually reworking this movie from 1982? Shooting new footage 25 years on? Will we have another version 10 years from now? The Definitive Director's Final Cut, with new scenes of Roy Batty watching attack ships on fire off the Shoulder of Orion?

Yes, yes, it's his right to do whatever he wants. It's his film. But come on.

My point was that at least with this set, one can get whichever version one wants, and then some.
I see your points, Ace & JD, and I understand and even agree with them. But I'll still get this set because I want the film, and don't entirely mind having the alternate versions.
Will I prefer (or even like) the newest edition? I don't know. I may end up hating it. But it seems worth it to me to have these various versions in one set, for comparing & contrasting if for nothing else. (Of course, if the price is too high, I may reconsider my desire...)

We all probably have our personal favorite version of Blade Runner, so another option the dvd manufacturer might consider is releasing these four versions seperately, so that a buyer can buy whichever version(s) he/she likes, and ignore the rest. For example, I loved being able to buy Planet of the Apes without having to get the four sequels.

Oh, JD mentioned Aliens... I for one liked the added bits, as I felt it added more depth to the characters, especially to Ripley and why she felt such devotion to Newt. I also liked the extended version of The Abyss, but primarily because I could tell stuff had been cut out at the climax, which made little sense in the original theatrical release. To each his own, I guess. (In my case, I also know that with those two films, we're not talking about shooting new footage 20+ years later, so the effect is less jarring to me than new Blade Runner footage might be.)

I hpe they are just using her to motion capture her performance and then digitally make her look like she did in 82. I mean, she's aged well... but not THAT well!

I want this collection to have the original 82 release on DVD. I prefer the Director's Cut, but sometimes I long for those stilted Harrison Ford voiceovers

They digitally enhanced Anthony Hopkins in 'Red Dragon' to look younger, so Hannibal's on screen age was appropriate for the Chronology of 'Dragon vs. 'Sheep. I presume they will do the same for Joanna.

Yes but it didn't really work that well in Red Dragon. Here's hoping they get it right in Blade Runner.

Bump to add pic.

Damn, look at all that!

Pre-order $50-odd USD from Amazon.com

Still not available to pre-order in the UK - and when it is, doubtless it'll be 50 GBP...

I have to admit that that set looks very impressive, especially for that kind of price.

Can't imagine what it would be in Australia. $50 US is amazing.

I'm in the UK and pre-ordered the above one and got it for $50, plus about $6-8 shipping.

I know it's region 1, but I have a multi-region player.

My foreign discs include the following

Space:1999 season 2-R4
Robocop-R1
Married with Children Seasons 1 and 4-R1
South Park Season 6-R1
Stargate SG-1 Season 1-R1 (this was before you could get it in the UK), so I'm okay.

Personally, I think the whole region coding is a farce, but that's maybe just me.

Me too.

What's the format? PAL or NTSC? I'd prefer more lines if possible.

That's a shame - I'd much prefer R2 / PAL.

Rumour has it that this box set won't be released in the UK and neither will there be a theatrical release...

Stiffed again.
