Default 1999 meets 2001

An interesting effort.

Perhaps someone here can validate my flimsy memory, but I seem to recall reading that the actress that serves Koenig coffee on his trip up to Alpha was the same actress seen in 2001 walking the circular walkway.

The coffee-serving stewardess is played by Laurie Davis. I don't recall who plays the '2001 walkway' stewardess.

Oh, several years ago, someone wrote a fanfic combining 1999 & 2001; that was also an interesting effort. Last I saw, it was archived at Metaforms, but many of those links no longer work. It might be at Ariana's fanfic site (or is it Astelle... whomever)... I'll try to find & post a link.

I was amazed to see how many concepts had been lifted from 2001 for breakaway, the stewardess and even the shape of moon base itself (lifts below the surface the shape of the buildings and so forth)... and the colour of the the suits. I prefer to think of it as homage of course...

That is a very well done cross-over, and as a rule, I am usually not much of a fan of cross-overs.

According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), the Aries 1B stewardess was played by Edwina Carroll. Two other women simply identified as 'stewardess' were Penny Brahms and Heather Downham.

I remember an online article about the stewardess who retrieves Floyd's pen in the Orion shuttle (mentioning the actress by name), but that site seems to have disappeared. I'm guessing that stewardess may have been either Brahms or Downham, but I don't recall for certain.

According to Bizony (2001; Filming the future), page 34, Heather Downham is identified as serving meals on Aries 1B. Is that wrong then?

And BTW, a big thank you to DX-SFX for recommending me Bizony's book and Cinefex #85. Excellent stuff! I'm reading the former right now and have finished the latter.

I think one of the stewardesses was interviewed for a fairly recent documentary about 2001. May be someone else will confirm before I manage to dig it out.

Amazed ? It was a Gerry (which plot idea shall I recycle this week) Anderson production !

Seriously though, I believe Kubrick did consider taking legal action when he saw the show.

Also, the idea of using 2001 music on a GA Production actually dates back to production of UFO when Alan Shubrook (I think) arranged for one of the 2001 themes to be played against rushes of the end title sequence.

I'm not at all surprised. Amazing the things you learn on a forum.

I didn't actually see 2001 for the first time until the very early eighties. I remember looking out of the windows of the Aries 1B and suddenly thinking, strewth, that's Moonbase Alpha!!!

I did the same. I saw 2001 for the first time in the late seventies, probably just after the second series of S99 finished. I recall being miffed that 2001 ripped off S99!
