Default UFO Technical Manual

Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but this might be an interesting read. Some homegrown product to go up against the Japanese mooks...

Posted the link but it was too long! How can I make it shorter?

Anyway just search for UFO Technical Manual by Chris Bentley on amazon.co.uk...

It's not released yet in the US. I wonder if it's any good.

From what I've seen so far - mainly a brief description and the cover on Amazon - the illustrations seem to be computer generated and the technical data is limited to what is mentioned on screen - unlike the Graham Bleathman cutaway books for example, which incorporated a great deal of inventive speculation.

So far the only illustration I've seen is that cutaway of SID which features on the book's cover, and in this the only internal details shown are the computer banks seen in episodes. If this is the approach taken with the rest of the book, it could be a bit underwhelming, particularly in terms of the vehicles. Shado Control and Moonbase might have more potential for visual presentation though.

Bentley wrote the generally excellant ... Complete UFO guide book. However, the bit that 'jarred' with me was the speculative performance description of the craft.

One of the reasons I love UFO, most of the craft were routed in real science. I'm not saying they would have worked, they obviously would'nt have. But there an thought towards the engineering behind them.

Lunar Module - lifting body technology of MF-21 et-al. It might have been worth mentioning that Burt Rutan used the 'piggy back' methed of getting to space.

The Gyro-plane was obviously influenced by the X-22 and other ducted fan technologies.

Skydiver - Based on the Polaris and submarine launched Snark.

The list goes on, the designers and model makers were well aware of these 'real' technologies and that was to me the strength of a lot of Anderson series. It would be a shame not to acknowledge it.

Marty...

I looked on Amazon and there is still no definate release date confirmed, and Retroboy noted yesterday that he had seen somewhere that the relaese date was being put back again with early 2008 being mentioned, but this is rumour and speculation to be honest, mind you with no date on Amazon it does make me wonder.

Regards the artwork, I really wish they had used an artist instead of going the computer generated route, but I will still have to have it as it has UFO on the cover.

www.play.com have it listed for release on 31/08/07. Whether it actually is released on that day remains to be seen!
