Shuttle Astronauts To Carry Lightsaber Original 'Star Wars' Prop To Be Sent Into Space HOUSTON -- Astronauts on space shuttle Discovery will have a little something extra in their gear when they blast off in October: Luke Skywalker's original Jedi lightsaber. As part of the 30th anniversary celebration of "Star Wars," NASA has agreed to carry the prop weapon into orbit and jettison it in space. collectSPACE.com said the lightsaber will be handed over to the space agency by Chewbacca at the Oakland Airport, not far from George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch. It's reported the priceless piece will be greeted in Houston by a group of Stormtroopers, along with R2D2

I hope one of the Astronauts has the sense to put it in their bag and bring it back so that it can be looked after properly. Hopefully the fan base will make such a fuss that Lukas decides to send a copy instead. How Bl**dy stupid. They can give it to me if they really don't want it.
....as if there wasn't enough space junk cluttering up space already.

The report linked above says that it's going to the Space Station and will be returned on the shuttle to be placed in the Lucasfilm archives...after travelling over 6m miles in space.
That's better... I feel happier now...

Ok I read it the info and we can calm down, it will hang around on the space station and then return to earth to be displayed and then returned to Lucas. He's not nuts after all. I think the news paper got it wrong.... I was going to say....

So, how many of us instantly (and I mean instantly) said something to the effect of "Hey, that's the one from Return of the Jedi"?

Yeah, and he lives in HK ... I did get in touch with him a few years back and he extended an invitation to come see his collection, but I never got round to it.
Most of it has been sold off now. Maybe Star Wars didn't do it for him any more. Shame, really. I have three MR sabres, but most of his were handbuilt fan items. His were all excellent pieces. |

I have an MR one which I thought was ROTJ, but according to his collection it is an ESB one. Very cool whatever. Very glad I grabbed it before MR lost the licence.

I've got a pretty big Light saber collection. That's what got me into collecting props.
