Haven't watched the whole set yet, but from what I've seen so far -

Picture quality - Arrival.

The new HD picture restoration/remastering is good, though in my view suffers like most digital transfers I've seen from lack of contrast. The best available picture I'm aware of however.

Sound quality - Arrival.

Other forums have reported problems with the 5.1 audio tracks. I haven't got the equipment to play it, so can't comment. I found I did have to turn the sound up quite high on the mono track.

Extras -

Feature length documentary on the making of the series. I saw this at a screening at the National Film Theatre and it has some nice interviews, including recent recordings of Wanda Ventham, Peter Bowles and an extremely entertaining Derren Nesbitt. Archive interviews include David Tomblin and Alexis Kanner. But otherwise it was very unimaginative. The narration was very pedestrian, and although the narrator - Neil Pearson - is a well known professional actor, his voice is extremely dull, his diction is
appalling and he seemed to be aiming at the nine-year old viewer.

Extensive but slightly haphazard picture galleries with wonderful previously
unreleased music tracks.

Period behind the scenes 16mm and super 8 footage. The 16mm film was shot on a location recce, and is a fantastic view of Portmeirion as it was in the mid 60s (hasn't changed much, surprise surprise !) There are three 8mm sequences, one showing the original Rover, another very good quality sequence showing a variety of location filming activities, and another slightly less good sequence that includes filming the chess match. Very nice extras.

Making of book. A very detailed and meticulously researched book on the production of the series by Andrew Pixley. A compendium of facts, figures, and personal recollections compiled from a wide range of sources.

Overall, I'd say it was well worth 40 British Pounds, particularly if you're a fan and even if you already have the series. Possibly a little highly priced at 60, if you're just a casual viewer - I don't think the new transfer and sound are that much of an advantage.

Anyone else have any comments ?

one showing the original Rover,

I have always just heard about this, I have never seen any pictures of it yet. What does it look like and does anyone have a link to any references to it?

The 'Plan B Rover' is so iconic and fits with the surreal environment of the show so well I keep forgetting it was not what they started off with.

Regarding the remake - last I heard was that possible backers Sky had pulled out, but Granada were still trying to get it off the ground. No definate news either way at the moment as far as I'm aware.

There are some pictures of the 'Plan A' Rover in the recent Prisoner book by Rob Fairclough. The original was based on a go-kart with a circular body and a hovercraft style 'skirt'. It was taken to Portmeirion for filming, but could barely be driven on a flat surface, and was completely unable to cope with the variable terrain that the scripts called for. The super 8 film on the Network set shows the film crew attempting to operate it without much success.

Unless I'm wrong I did'nt think the HD version is out until later in 2008. Furthermore I'm sure I have read somewhere, that the hi-def version will be a Blu-ray only release.

That said the picture quality andsonics are immaculate.

Moi aussi ! En mon avis le TFI coffret de 2003 etait plus bien de l'edtion Carlton de la meme temps. Le presentation est aussi plus belle de l'edition de Network.

Je ne suis pas un numero !

Ok, you're no number, but this is not a reason to blindly trust (to speak like you-know-who ) the google translator. I mean : I understand, I appreciate, I just hope for you that you'll never put anything precious at jeopardy relying on such kind of translation

ps : thank you for appreciating french expertise

eummmm.....

well, sorry if it was your own best effort. Myself I've been often mocked by the peers on site such as Spacebattles for my esl capacities. I'm not mocking you. I salute your trying on the french language. Just that..... there is place for improvement
Don't worry, french is one of the most difficult language on earth to acquire. I'll be happy to help on that if you wish to.
