Default 'Jason King'

Thanks to the local library's eclectic selection of DVDs, I saw this 'cult' series for the first time last night.

It was... interesting.

I can only agree with Bill Bryson's opinion: I have never lost the desire to work the fellow over with a baseball bat studded with nails.

Mind you, I did see a very young-looking Tony Anholt playing one of King's buddies.

On the whole, I think I prefer 'The Professionals'. Anyone want to mount a case for the defence?

Nope. Jason King wasn't even a product of it's time! Even as a kid I remember hating it! How a man as overly camp and ruffled as Jason King could ever claim to be a magnet for women is so funny!

That's not what I've heard !

Don't think Bill Bryson realised the show was meant to be a send up of that kind of action series. Apparantly it only got made after the Jason King character appeared in Department S and proved popular in Germany - and also with Lew Grade's wife ! Quite a few UFO/1999 actors in the show, including Phillip Madoc, Gary Raymond, Freddie Jones, Julian Glover, Ayshea Brough, Mike Pratt, Clinton Greyn, Hildegard Neil, Clifton Jones, Patrick Mower, Al Mancini, Alex Scott, Allan Cuthbertson, and in an episode called - appropriately enough - Zenia, Zenia Merton.

Haha, when I was a boy, I loved Jason King. He was so cool and a womans man... But I preferred the show "Department S" to the show "Jason King". Nowadays I think his looks were awful, but at the time he was so cool that I also wanted to wear his kind of shirts - of course I was too young to wear his (how we call it here in Switzerland "twenty past eight"-moustache.

But remember, this was a time where everybody smoked and even Formula 1 drivers finished their cigarettes and threw them out of the cockpits of their formula 1 cars, just before the start of a race.

Well - I'm going to watch a few more, just to be fair. My main problem isn't the King character; it's what I feel are plots that don't hang together, and some blatantly unconvincing fight scenes.

I think I 'get' the camp humour, it just needs to be a little better executed.

No doubt we'll see a big-screen remake in due course....

I'd agree that JK isn't as good as some of the other ITC action shows - it didn't have the same kind of budget, and some of the plots were written around shots of Peter Wyngarde wandering around various European cities.
Some of the better ones (if you go for the comedy angle) include A Page Before Dying, To Russia With... Panache and An Author in Search of Two Characters. More serious stories - Nadine, Toki and Zenia.

If memory serves, Peter Wyngarde was voted by Australian women the man they would most like to lose their virginity to in 1971 or something like that?

Personally I prefer his performance in the classic Avengers ep A Touch Of Brimstone. Now if the movie had been a follow up to or a remake of that episode it would have been a lot better!

I think one has to put this in a little bit of context, when it first aired it was seriously popular [at least Wyngarde was] I distinctly recall seeing PW face plastered on the sides of buses and posters everywhere. It definatley appealed to the so-called teenybopper girls as they termed them back then. Probably a reason why the storylines were so vapid.

Me, even back then I thought it was shabby [being shot on 16mm did'nt help] and did'nt stand up to the underrated and vastly superior Dept S. It also had the handicap of not having the lovely Rosemary Nicols who along with Linda Thorsen set my pulse racing.

BTW Network are planning to release Dept S in the UK later this year, I'm told there will stacks of extras. If one can't wait I would thoroughly recommend Umbrella's Dept S box set.

I concur with most other posters view on Jason King as a series - allbeit, I do see it as an unique time capsule and glimpse of a piece social history that existed briefly between the end of the '60s and prior to the glam scene taking hold. It was also the start of the end of ITC drama/fiction/action series.

Marty...

I loved him in Flash Gordon (1980). He was cover head to toe as Klytus. Best move he ever made!

Jason King and Department S are cult classic in Germany

but its because Radical dubbing
they are substantial differences between the German and English-language versions
the dialoge became over the top, on ege of Parody !
"a unique mixture of (german) streetslang and ironic tongue-in-cheek remarks"

by the way The Persuaders! became of this, also cult status in germany

You'd be surprised what Jason King has in common with Albert Steptoe!

I suppose if a forum member here, at the time, gave Steptoe or Jason King a false alibi, would be that perverting the course of justice?
