Default The making of Thunderbirds

these movie newsreels are quite well known now,but thought Id do screengrabs to see if theres anything interesting to spot, Ive only concentrated on the model side rather than the puppets

firstly the parade colour newsreel, showing Derek Meddings and crew working on the set of the episode Day of Disaster, but features the gunship wadie model from Stingray being exploded, why I dont know, maybe a cut scene or a practice scene?

attatching wires to for the explosives I imagine

a mechanical timer for the explosive timing, I imagine they used these for all the flashing lights on the puppet sets also

and Derek Meddings being interviewed with behind the scenes footage of filming on the episodes the man from mi5 and cry wolf

note only the front half of Fab2 has been made, and the house brick in the water and fans for the waves

how the scene finally appeared in the episode, very impressive, that painted backscene is gorgeous, its great how you see the model boat at speed on the behind the scenes footage, filmed at high speed, and then it and the waves are slowed down nice and realistic on the final shot

filming Thunderbird 2 landing on a baseboard covered with a tarpaulin

what appears to be Ray Brown on the left in the model work shop

a model maker working on the house from cry wolf, sat on a piece of chipboard on tressels, note the tools in the background

hes only painting the side thats seen,

model buildings stored

thunderbird 5 hung up

note the revell "everything is go" Atlas kit on the bench along with trimite auto paint, Ray Brown appears to be working on the hoods truck

A polystrene mine shaft along with humbrol tin and revel box in the background

is there any more behind the scenes footage?

Although I have seen this particular clip, it's nice to have the chance to look at the stills in detail - you've captured some nice choices, Mike - thanx

Those fans don't look like they are about to fall in the water...much!!
I wouldn't like to be touching the water if they did.

The Day of Disaster shot was, to my knowledge, rigged specially for the cameras on a Saturday morning.

The is some behind the scenes footage from Scarlet - but I've yet to get around to picking up the phone to trace it... Must do that on Monday.

Got these on my DVDs. I do wish I could reach into the shots of TB2 (looks like the first model with the wider intakes) and rescue it from destruction etc. Wish I could have been part of that team and seen it coming together.
