Default The Last Starfighter

I borrowed "The Last Starfighter" on video last night, just because I really like it as a film and its a great blast from the 80s. Sure its a rip off of lots of things and the primitive CGI isn't the best, but it had something that made it really entertaining... great retelling of the old story, of man going nowhere suddenly being launched onto the universal stage and becoming a hero... just like Luke... "I want to go with you to Alderaan and learn the ways of the force." They both worked because they told it differently.

Though I hate remakes, this is one that could be done keeping the story and the vehicles but updating the CGI. The Gunstar is one cool ship that never got a fair go I think.

Ah! I haven't thought of this one is a long while, but I have fond memories. I think a quick check at the library is now in order to see if I can borrow it for the kids to watch. I need summer activities to fill the days!

The gunstar was very cool - ron Cobb did a bang up job on it.

Yep, there's a shot, a close up of it as it fires some laser bolts that looks superb. Catherine Mary Stewart ... definitely a sci-fi babe.

I remember a resin kit being advertised in the mid/late 90's , anymore than that , I don't know . ( Though I'm pretty sure Comet stocked it ).

Third model down on this page of Randy Cooper's site - he mentions selling a gunstar pattern to 'monsters in motion' - might be a lead.

Thanks for the links everyone. I was trying to remember who had made the Gunstar model.... Randy... The Lego one is absolutely superb too. Definitely needs redoing this film with today's tech. (Yes its me saying it.) Keep it the same just bring in the models and up to the minute cgi. Interesting to note that the cgi results they got should have warned everyone that a mixture of models and cg is definitely the way to go.

And funny you should mention that. My daughter has dibs on my second ERTL kit and that is, in fact, on the agenda after summer camps are over in the next few weeks.

this was a classic flick and you have to give credit where credit is due, i think
this was the very first movie to ever use CGI

Reading about it on the IFDB one person mentions that there is a sequel/ or redo in the wings somewhere... hope it comes off, but hope they keep the Gunstar as it is and the characters as they are. The baddies could be slightly less corny, but it adds to it.
