Thought I'd post something quick about masking for those who may not know.
For masking around curves, cut a thin ( 2mm ? ) strip of masking tape. ![]() Force the tape into the shape you want, making sure there are no "folds". ![]() Now go around the middle of that tape with larger ( 6 mm ?) tape following the curve. ![]() Now add the main "cover" tape, but but again, make sure there are no wrinkles (as demonstrated by the arrow) or the airbrush WILL find this hole and force paint into an unwanted area. ![]() Spray, wait a minute or two and carefully remove the tape. I've used the blue rattle can that shows how old paint globs up on the surface. ![]() Its easy, and I'm sure most of you know, but for those who dont... |

Very good. Thanks! That will be useful. My masking has had only so-so results so far.
(I was a bit distracted by that drawing in the background of the first picture, but once I got past that...) |

Heres the black stripes, masked and painted one at a time allowing a good amount of time for each stripe to dry.
![]() Ready for mask number two. ![]() The cherry on top. I painted it dark red, then thinned some lighter red for mist coats. Not really sure what exact color any of this is...just winging it. ![]() I have now glued and decaled the model and am waiting for the parts to dry. Even though the font is wrong on most of her, she sure looks cool. Pics soon. |

That looks superb. As others have commented your masking is excellent (must admit I hate this part of modelling and it never works as well as yours). And a very speedy build indeeed!

Thanks for the encouragement guys.
But as always something HAD to go wrong. Yesterday I was thrilled the the large number 1 decal that goes over the blue section stayed on. This is rare when applying over a flat or matte finish (which it was). Wellll.... I awoke this morning to find that decal laying on the bar next to the model! Sooo, back to plan A. Mask it and make it myself. I promised myself this would be a speed build, and that it would be done by today. And now (fingers crossed) it IS! ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm going outside to take better natural light pics today, so stay tuned. James |

I'm not the best at taking photos, but I managed to get a few off. Now I can put this thread to rest.

Gasp! I can't believe that you had someone throw that thing up in the air like that so you could take a picture of it! And for it to hang there SO level while you snapped it...an no blur either! Fantastic photography!

Terrific model, spot on sir.
i very much like the background with the sand and trees making it look as though, Scott has landed to take photo's of his TB1. Makes it look very tv like, thats the kind of backgrounds i will be experimenting with. |

Hunch, I just found this thread. What a fabulous TB-1
A great 'how to...' as well; one question though if you don't mind..... how do you produce that superb weathering/dirtying effect? I can see you mask segments off, but the smooth gradiation of the effect is stunning: the darker bands around TB-1's body, and around the blue engine section, for example. Cheers, Steve. |
