Default Thunderbirds on blu-ray

Both HMV and Amazon are advertising the original series on blu-ray discs for release mid September.

Does anyone have any details? Let's hope they've not chopped off the top and bottom of the picture to get it into 16:9 format (surely that's pointless, as most modern TVs will stretch the original picture to that format if you want it), and dare we hope for the original soundtrack without all the 5.1 bells and whistles?

With you 100% there. Mono soundtrack option please and no cropped widescreen bullshit. We were told that the young market demands widescreen now but who do they think are buying these DVD's?

could someone explain to me the difference from DVD as Ive never seen Blu ray or know anything about it?

sounds to me as though its a money making thing

I think the picture quality on the DVD is excellent, although that has shown up the wires on planes that you could never see before.

only way I would be interested if it was even better quality, no added sound effects and not cropped for widescreen

There's no comparison Mike. Bluray is much higher definition.

Blu-ray discs play at a much higher definition than regular DVDs so you should get better picture quality, along with improved sound and special features.

I don't have a player myself, as I have an upscaling TV, which gives a fantastic picture from an ordinary DVD, and from what I've heard you don't notice too much of a difference if your TV is smaller than 42". So I think there's an element of "emperor's new clothes" about them.

I think the main reason I would plunge is if this release gives us the original soundtrack to the series without all the annoying sound effects.

Hi Mike
All I know is that the picture quality is a quantum leap from regular DVD......you'll be able to see the brush strokes on the puppet's faces.
People who've seen the Space 1999 stuff shown at a recent fanderson event, say it's just like being there.
I'll leave it to someone else to explain more...it's a matter of pixels and image resolution.
I posted some Blu ray grabs on another thread showing 2001 A Space odyssey. The quality is AMAZING.

And the ability to take much sharper screen grabs. Finally, a whole new library of useful reference is going to become available. Details previously missed are going to be far easier to see when it comes to recognising kit parts.

What I saw of the new DVDs on the Space: 2099 website makes my Megaset discs look just awful. :-(

certainly better than my old vhs taped from the tv

so how does the process work, is it a better scan of the original negatives?

surley if the original shot wasnt in focus for example how could it be improved?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but will HD BluRay not show up any/all imperfections considering that at the time it was made they could get away with more because the camera would not pick up very fine details.

Do "made up things", ie, not real life, not have to be ultra fine detailed etc for the HD process?

If they are scanning the original prints and not just using the high resolution scans they made for the DVD releases they will be fairly stunning to look at!

The sympathetic television resolution the camera crews knew would ultimately be showing their work certainly would have allowed the teams workarounds however Blu-ray copies will not reveal anything that the original prints didn't capture - warts and all! great for kit part spotting and paint details as has been pointed out before, but also possibly showing a rather obvious film grain!.

Does anyone know if the series is being re-graded or for that matter re-scanned for this release?

True, more imperfections will show but if you watch it on an analogue non hi def TV, it'll look pretty much exactly the same as it did when first broadcast, not allowing for how poor the original prints were that were struck from the negatives.

There's not one single title available that's tempted me to get Bluray - all the so-called hi-def tellys I see in Comet etc look crap and i can't see what all the fuss is about!

I think it was when I saw the 3rd Spider-Man movie in Blu Ray at a Best Buy store that I finally had that "so THAT'S what all the fuss is about" moment.

Having seen a few minutes of Space on a hi def TV from a Hi def source and seen how OTT the makeup looked on the actors faces and that the Eagle looked like a model then I would have to say that I might prefer the current number of pixels on my TV.
Then again it might just be a question of having to get use to the new look.
