Default Thunderbirds Production Order

Right - come on kit spotters. Let's put this to bed once and for all, cos it's driving me mad.

Based on what we know, with the episodes and the behind the scenes videos to hand... what is the proper production order of Thunderbirds?

Now, I suspect Trapped in the Sky went into production by itself in September 1964, meaning that I think the first pair of episodes to shoot were Pit of Peril and City of Fire. We know, catergorically, that those are the first three.

But where does it go from there? Now, Alan Pattillo's diaries suggest he directed Sun Probe, although David Lane gets the final credit for the episode. We know that David Lane's first official directing gig was Terror in New York City with David Elliott. So, if Sun Probe came early on (and it's a pretty good contender for a 25-minuter) then it must have been done by someone other than Lane.

So far, this is my idea for where certain episodes came. Can anyone add to this??

1. Trapped in the Sky – Alan Pattillo Sept
2. Pit of Peril – Desmond Saunders Oct 64
3. City of Fire – David Elliott Oct 64
4. Sun Probe – Alan Pattillo (and David Lane) Nov 64
5. The Uninvited – Desmond Saunders Nov 64
6. The Mighty Atom (originally Pattillo? Credited to David Lane). Dec 64
7. Vault of Death – David Elliott Dec 64
8. Move – And You’re Dead - Alan Pattillo Dec / Jan 64/65
2? Security Hazard - Alan Pattillo
2? Attack of the Alligators – David Lane
26. The Cham-Cham – Alan Pattillo

I'm certain that The Cham-Cham was last in production of the first 26. Security Hazard definitely wasn't the last, contrary to the Complete Gerry Anderson, as one of the behind the scenes videos shows Olsen being sculpted, whilst Security Hazard is being produced.

I also think that Martian Invasion and Brink of Disaster are later episodes as Ian Scoones gets the credit for second unit, following Brian Johnson's departure.

So, any ideas? And what interesting stuff can you spot in the videos?

Only spotted stuff for padding in Ciy of Fire, in that the boys Visor masks change colour when they are cutting through the doors,in one shot they are clear next they are blue. Also the tower commander was re voiced by Matt Zimmerman, apart from one line when asking where the fire tenders are? this is spoken in Ray Barrets voice.

Yeah, the padding for City of Fire was probably among the last stuff shot for the 25-minuters, at the same time Security Hazard was filmed...

I always thought terror in new york was an early episode, as its the only episode after trapped in the sky, with the launch sequence TB2 miniature still sporting the small "2" on its side before its set on fire

in pit of peril it looks freshly painted with a large 2 on the side

also the black and white behind the scenes footage shows the special effects dept working on the man from mi5 and cry wolf,
and the puppet side working on city of fire, with blanch from that episode being finished off and with dialogue heard from security
hazard

the colour behind the scenes film, appears to be earlier, with a set up shot of the gun boat wadie from stingray being exploded for the press, but its on the set of day of disaster so that could be an early episode, also its believed that the msp from day of disaster was later converted to a fire engnie for city of fire so that would put that episode before city of fire, and that fire engine later appears in cry wolf

Nah. Terror in New York City was probably filmed around april 1965. A magazine from July 65 has a picture of Derek Meddings with the Empire State Building. I reckon that SFX were about 6 to 8 weeks behind the puppet unit...

Remember that there were several models of Thunderbird 2...

Blanch probably isn't being finished off - more remade.

I'm trying to find a copy of the other black and white film at the moment...

Unlikely. For copyright issues, they're likely to have sent their own staff photographer. Besides, we know it was shot in '65 - it certainly wasn't one of the very first in production, although it was likely a half hour episode - but not definitely...

The order is work-outable. It just means working out what appeared where

Here's what I've come up with so far:

1. Trapped in the Sky – Alan Pattillo Sept
2. Pit of Peril – Desmond Saunders Oct 64
3. City of Fire – David Elliott Oct 64
4. Sun Probe – Alan Pattillo (and David Lane) Oct 64
5. The Uninvited – Desmond Saunders Oct 64
6. The Mighty Atom (originally Pattillo? Credited to David Lane). Dec 64
7. Vault of Death – David Elliott Dec 64
8 Operation Crash-Dive – Desmond Sanders
9. Move – And You’re Dead - Alan Pattillo Dec / Jan 64/65
10
11
12 The Perils of Penelope – Alan Pattillo / Desmond S
13 Terror in New York City – David Elliott / Lane April 65
14 End of the Road – David Lane
15. Day of Disaster – David Elliott June 65
16. Edge of Impact – Desmond Saunders June 65
17. Desperate Intruder – David Lane Aug 65
18. 30 Minutes After Noon – David Elliott (m) Aug 65
19 The Impostors - Desmond Saunders Aug 65
20 The Man From MI.5 – David Lane
21 Cry Wolf – David Elliott
22 Danger At Ocean Deep – Desmond Saunders
Martian Invasion – David Elliott
22 Brink of Disaster – David Lane
23. The Duchess Assignment – David Elliott Oct 65
24 Security Hazard – Desmond Saunders
25 Attack of the Alligators – David Lane Nov 65
26. The Cham-Cham – Alan Pattillo Dec 65

as I say only one that sticks out is city of fire for the fire engine reasons, I think day of disaster needs to move up the list ahead of it.

Day of Disaster ahead of City of Fire? Why?

the main reason I think it is because this model was believed to have been designed to be the msp transporter from day of disaster, and that it was later reworked as a fire engine for city of fire, and was then seen in cry wolf,

the parade newsreel however accurate it may be Im not sure, talks of a brand new tv show being filmed, trapped in the sky footage is shown but theyre seen filming puppets on a set Ive never seen used, so think it could be early production with the set of day of disaster ie the bridge is seen in the tank

Except City of Fire was shot as a half hour. So new stuff would have been shot after Day of Disaster.

City of Fire was definitely David Elliott's first episode and was definitely a half hour episode (I have the script here).

That colour news film must have been shot around the time of 30 Minutes After Noon. David Elliott is directing and Paddy Seale is the lighting cameraman seen and puppets from the episode are seen hanging around (including the robot). Plus, the puppets from the recently shot Day of Disaster are still hanging around. If they are shooting 30 Minutes, then that would explain why the effects unit are shooting Day of Disaster, as they operated several weeks behind the puppet unit.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is an answer...

gonna be tricky aint it,

I think its going to be difficult as episodes that where half hour then had to have extra footage shot after theyve filmed parts of other half hour episodes.

add to that the fact they had more than one film unit,

and the puppets scenes where shot probably not in line with the effects department

it certainly wasnt shot like a normal programme was Id think, Im amazed at how Lew Grade worked, the way he would let Gerry and co go off with his money and get so far into it before even viewing it himself

It looks like the Psychiatrist from "Day Of Disaster" which would tie in with the bridge model set.

It was, with advertisments. Just as the others were 'half-hour'.
