Default World Navy Sub 27

Here is captain Jordans sub from the Stingray episode The man from the navy. later in Thunderbirds episode The Man from Mi5.

On Marc J Frattisso's site he mentions that he thinks it could be based on a miget toy racing car, Im not so sure, I think it could be based on a toy, but of what Ive no idea.

In Stingray it appears in Grey primer, with a few ripmax bits on it, such as the oval vent and white ship vent on top of the periscope.

just after it surfaced, it seems to have gained a rudder...

here it is later in Thunderbirds, the large circular side window Im not sure of, and its gained lots of airfix srn-1 bits
Interestingly, there is a black and white photo of the right hand side of it in the Japanese book in its Thunderbirds guise but it still has WN27 on it, but we never see that side in Thunderbirds

Definitely a toy racing car Mike. Imagine the sub traveling in reverse and you'll get a better idea of the profile. The conning tower is sitting where the driver would sit. One side is resting against the high part where the seat back would go and the other where the car body rises to house the windscreen. The thin end of the sub is the front of the racecar - you can still see the grill. The round nubs where the 2 axles went are integrated into the design as well. Lovely screen grabs as usual. Thanks!

Similar to this kind of Racecar:

right ok Ill get searching, front engined f1 car such as a vanwall or ferrari, Ill try and work out the size, I think the main thing to try and see is the grill which is the rear of the sub, that should give some clues.

thanks for the pic

yeah, I think its more of a generic toy of a f1 car of the time, but may have be based on a BRM, as I say, its just a cheap toddlers push along toy.

Im sure Ive seen photographs of the sub in the past, tv21 etc, does anyone know of any?

Im thinking the conning tower could be the Kibri oil tank kit, the same they used for the Marineville power plant? has the distintive lip over the top of it unlike the Vollmer ones.

im on the lookout for one of those kits if it is that.

Mike:
I don't recall any photos appearing in TV21 (could be wrong though). There's only 1 studio publicity shot of the sub I'm familiar with which was used in the B/W Somportex card set. I've included it here along with a clearer shot from the Big Pink Thunderbirds Book - Unfortunately the left side is close to the spine so it curls away and didn't scan as nicely as I'd hoped. The axle slots on the race car really stand out in this shot.
Cheers,
T"Form1

that is the shot i saw in the book but wasnt as nice a quality of yours, thanks for that, really useful.

Im sure Ive seen a shot of the rear as I remember thinking how they blended the tower to the rear of the car as it looked like it was all filler.
But at the time I didnt have the toy car or wasnt really on the lookout for it,so didnt take much notice, I even let some of those oval ripmax windows slip by stupidly as I didnt think I had any need for them.

And my foggy memory returns...
A TV21 shot from the '67 Spring Extra- Interesting but not that helpful for your purposes.

thats more than helpfull, its brilliant! never seen that before

can see it has the WN on the right, I was wondering if the black and white shot was done before the man from mi5 episode and that it may have been taken off later.

I really like that shot

I have been debating which version to do, as I like it in Stingray and it plays a big part in that, but I like it in Thunderbirds too, even tho it is an ugly looking thing. all my other stuff is Thunderbirds and thats my favourite show, that pic has made my mind up

itll be grey primer before its red anyway so may do it like the Stingray version for a while before I do it as the Thunderbirds one.

nearly everything Ive done so far is red

on the close up shot when the camera zooms in, looks like the roof and side are made from a metal tobacco tin lid? like on top of ned cooks camera car.

looking more at this, I think the large window it gained on the left hand side in Thunderbids could be a Ripmax Hinged hatch cover base, the same as used on Thunderbird 1's hangar. easy way to confirm this would be a good shot of one and could count the rivets. at first I thought it could have been from the frog bristol bloodhound or similar.

Im also looking at what the wings the hovercraft engines are attached too. I think they could be Lindberg f-104 starfighter wings, although they look a lot fatter and curvier on the studio model

Mike,

Those are Faller Water Tanks in the middle of the picture, not the Kibri tanks.
Here are a couple of shots of both kits:

brilliant Keith thanks, lovely pics.

I had an idea the tanks where in stepped pieces as they seem to be the same on the spi/kla satellite, but I didnt think they would cut them.

I wonder if the kibri one is still available, but under a different number?

whats the rough diameters of both of them Keith? and could you post these in the spi satellite thread please,

if it is them, looks like its the kibri one as the top is more pointy on the faller one

Just thinking out loud:
I wonder if the circular roof (Kibri Kit, lower right) was the inspiration for the rear of Thunderbird 3?

dya know I was thinking that and have just been looking at pics of thunderbird 3 to see if it had the inner circle on it,

Im not so sure now that this was used as the roof for the sub because of the ribs on it.
