Default Dark Star versus 2001…

Having seen recently John Carpenter’s “Dark Star” for the 1st time I was compelled to look for a little extra info over the net. Found this rather fun website showing the many analogies between the 2 movies.

http://www.surfling.org/darkstar/2001darkstar.html

…although everything in the movie is intended to be a spoof, I actually liked the ship’s design…

One of my favourite movies...
The explosive bolts in the lift floor, the gasball alien, the diary room entries - all just laugh out loud funny.

OMG….I’m so relieved now that I know I’m not the only one who liked it!!!!!
My fave version was the director’s cut. I’m glad to have this one in my DVD collection…and yes, I recommend it!

That was a Ron Cobb design. He went on to design the Nostromo in alien (among many other things).

Nice shot showing the elegant Dark Star…and the rather stubborn and talkative "Bomb 20"

This is one film you've gotta love sci-fi to appreciate! And I do appreciate it... haven't seen it in decades, though.
I'll never forget the beachball alien with the Creature from the Black Lagoon hands. Er, I guess they'd be feet. Um... whatever. Appendages.
Isn't this the movie where one of the guys does the 'knife trick' and looks like he actually stabs himself? I've never watched with a straight face the similar scene in Aliens with Bishop & Hudson. (Oh, and ouch, by the way!)

I'm a member here since literally day one and…shame on me…I’ve never seen that model before!!!!
Simply gorgeous in a “I want one now, badly!” kind-of-way…

Funny thing is…I initially was sort of reluctant to start this thread…soooo glad I did! DVD is now front row located!

Cheers guys!

I one of the space helmets as used in Dark Star as a kid (Star Team was the name back then). Embarrassed my brother to death when I'd wear it in the car!

The most amazing thing about DS is that the thing is a student project for school!! The student was John Carpenter...

Is Ron Cobb one of the actors? Definitely Dan O'Bannon (ALIEN) is one of them.

Strogly recommended: Alan Dean Foster's novel

Now that is just depressing me. As such an iconic spacecraft, I thought that the only model was one of Tony James' mini metals - which I don't know is even available today! - and NOW I see this!

The only way I could get more gasted in my flabber, would be if Chris said he had blueprints of this little beaut for sale!

(Should have him before now for the Eagle blueprints he sold me. Still trying to get them laminated to protect them from slobber as I l over them. Going to have to photocopy bits of them to use as positioning guides when I start building my 44", but other than that they are currently staying in the tube! Amazing work, everyone here should have a copy!)

A great little movie, I too have not watched it for years, I have had the DVD sat on the shelf since the early 2000s and never watched it. Need to rectify that now then.

I still have one of the Comet Miniatures Mini Metal models of the Dark Star its blister packaging, no they are not currently available and have not been freely available for about 10 years or more.

I first met Greg Jein because of this movie,
when I was selling kits as Anubis Productions back in 1991.

I had a model of the DS built and painted on my table and he stopped by and corrected me on one of the panels I had painted,...and I argued my point with HIM.
Of course at the time, I didn't know who I was talking to.

Fortunately, he found it amusing.

(I still think I was right )

.....Oh, and Yes, DS is a great movie.

Back when I was living in Phx, I made a point to fly over Benson AZ whenever I was buzzing around in that area.

Fans of the movie will understand.

You know , I've never seen it. Call myself a sci-fi fan too ...

I'll have to find myself a copy, I've read quite a bit about it over the years , especially with the ALIEN connection .
