Default Peter Gordeno

Just heard that Peter Gordeno has recently passed away. His role in UFO is prominently mentioned in this obit from the Independent.

How reputable is this source? (I simply don't know.) The IMDB has yet to include a date of death, nor was I able to find a corroborating source (and I don't count the Wikipedia as one of those).

The Independent is one of the more serious well regarded newspapers. I'd have no reason to doubt the story. Peter had had a recent issue with health I believe.

No obituary has appeared on the Fanderson web site yet.

Can't say I'm surprised. Since Chris Bentley left they seem to be more interested in plugging their merchandise than anything else.

Ah, sad news indeed, then. Another link with a favorite show gone.

Sad news as he was a nice guy.
When I went to visit the Bond set (Die Another Day) with a my friend Dave Watkin he suddenly said to me why don't we pop in and see Peter. I wondered who he meant but 5 minutes later we were driving past some private golf courses, through a guarded security gate and up this county lane past various mansion houses to this really nice place. We then spent several hours being entertained by Peter and his wife, listened to his newly recorded music, looked at his holiday snaps of his place in Florida and had a guided tour of his really posh house which he explained was 'only' the ex-guest building as he had sold the mansion a few years earlier for being too big.
He was still looking to arrange another dance show and was into doing sculptures, which were actually really impressive, but he had been battling the big C for quite a few years and had been traveling to America for special treatment.

Dammit, another one gone. What sad news, what a shame. As the obituary says, he was only in 7 episodes but you kinda think he's in many more, due to his screen presence.

I have also seen his death mentioned in the Italian press - as we know, 'UFO' was very big in Italy.

Am I right in thinking he's actually the first member of SHADO we see in the series?

Thanks, Mr Gordeno. Rest in peace. I hope you're limbo-ing under the gates of Heaven right now.

Sad news indeed.

I remember Peter singing and Dancing on Saturday Night TV (The Saturday Crowd I think) before he appeared as Captain Carlin.

My thoughts are with his family.

A good obit. Most of us will go through our whole lives and not accomplish as much.

It's too bad that he listened to his agent and bailed after 7 episodes. That's not the way to treat people who he believed stuck their necks out for him. But then again, they didn't give him any character development after the first episode. He basically appeared a couple of minutes each episode to launch from Skydiver then blow the UFO away. Even Captain Waterman did the same and we never got to learn anything more about either captain. I guess that's one thing I would have liked from the show, more episodes featuring the recurring characters so we could learn their backstories.

The 'agent afraid of typecasting' story isn't true so it wasn't Peters fault. The shows financiers told Gerry & Silva to loose Peter and George Sewell, and so various reasons were created to protect the actors feelings.

I've read Alec Freeman was written out because George Sewell was considered 'unattractive'. (Even if that were true, surely it's irrelevant to the character?) Other sources say Sewell had to honour other commitments.

Which is true? A bit of both, maybe?

The gap between the first half of the series and the final episodes did see some actors leave because of other commitments. The closure of the studio was unforeseen.

RIP Capt. Peter Carlin. I always liked him in UFO. He was the first main SHADO character we ever saw in UFO, right at the start of the Identified episode !

"Take Jean back to the car .. I must get this !"

Nice obi in the Independant. Good to see UFO mentioned.
