Big fan and dont know if its really been adeqaulty explained other than the fact there appears to have been an old zoo on the island and they may have had the bears in there.

Thats where Saywer Jack and Kate were locked up.

The Others may have a better answer.

There was some implied connection between the comic that is shown in the first few progs being read by the boy, Walt, and the fact that the bear suddenly appears. Other things emerge like that then appear to fade away in significance as the series goes (ie what the hell is the smoke creature really?). At first I was convinced the island was a virtual reality for people with pyschiatric problems ( so when they are put under extreme stress they resolve them).Hence Locke can walk, Jack sees his Dad all the time and when a character leaves the island (ie dies) they do seem to have resolved a crucial personal dilema and make a self sacrifice that saves them from purgatory. Now I'm not so sure about anything at all and have fallen a season behind (4) which I will get maybe at Xmas.

Strangely enough, I've never seen it. Worth watching? Can I hope to catch up with what seems a very complex narrative?

Its all too confusing for me... I have a friend whose bought all available DVDs of it... The fun thing about it though is that they can have the most ridiculous plot lines and say its all part of the mystery of the thing. Heros is another show that happily does the same.

They have never really explained much about what is going on but that is what I like about it. The characters are great and the mystery is very compelling. That being said when they finally do get around to explaining it I hope it doesn't suck like so many finales have in the past.

Or that it doesn't simply peter out without being resolved? Chris Carter, I'm looking at you....

My ex-girlfriend got me into watching LOST, but not until the second season. I just acquired the first season and thoroughly enjoyed watching all the episodes. It was terrific from the opening shot of the first scene and forward. I've only seen about 50% of the rest of the episodes, so I have some catching up to do. I don't know that they'll ever be able to tie everything together, as there are so many mysteries. Still -- I've found it very watchable and the cast is excellent.
