Credible reporting this time, after so much speculation. This is gonna upset a LOT of people. Stand by for keyboard meltdown among the fans.

However, I'm optimistic: I was crestfallen when Eccleston left, but I've been extremely happy with Tennant in the role.

The quote from Tennant is interesting and I really do see his point. I suspect it's an emotional time for him and I admire his self-discipline in moving on. I guess the existence of the Doctor's 'human' counterpart ( awful idea!) provides a way for him to return from time to time, should he wish to. Meanwhile, I'll be very surprised if he doesn't have a good go at a Hollywood career.

I've read online speculation that Tennant will be 'killed off' by the Zygons, since he's publicly commented that they were his favourite villains as a kid. We'll see....

I feel like a tool 'cos I've said (here and off-line) that I didn't think he'd be going for a while. I was wrong and I publicly admit it.

Anyway, I'm off to see my bookie!

PS: Hawk & Steve, I hear Russell Brand has just resigned from the Beeb in disgrace. Hopefully the fact that his behaviour was judged offensive precludes him from the part.

Well, when it comes to actors portraying the Doctor, hanging around isn't the kosher thing to do. And claiming you want to do it forever will get you canned.

Back no topic, how about Alan Rickman?

'By Grabthar's Hammer'

He can do menace and comedy in equal measure

That's not a bad idea at all. I thought his timing in Galaxy Quest was spot on.

Agreed - Rickman's world-weary line 'Is there a pub on this spaceship?' (I'm paraphrasing) is exquisitely funny. Perfect comic delivery.

However, I don't quite see him as the Doctor. But he'd probably do a good job as the Master.

Are we going to have an 'I think X should play the Doctor' thread? I'm not sure if I want to....

Actually the line was:

"where are you going?"

"I'm going to find a pub"

Classic!

I think that's quite a good choice actually, but I could never take him seriously in that role. He'd make a great Klingon as far as looks go. James Nesbitt gets my vote.

That could be a different approach to the role, a sort of Boris Johnson clueless idiot going through the stories in a bit of a daze, instead of the often all knowing bit of a bore.

Tennant was taken seriously?... I've never seen any of the Doctors 'seriously' since Mr Baker - they've always been a bit of a joke to me.

I'd like to see Richard E Grant get another crack at it. A couple minutes was just not long enough!
