Astronomy nerd mode ACTIVATE!
I knew it would be that, but that's because I'm nerdy enough to have gone out of my way to find out ahead of time what the phase would be!
And thus I can tell you that the phase of the Earth as seen from the moon is wrong in just about every shot in "Breakaway."
Since there was a New Moon on 9 Sep 99, when Koenig took command of Alpha, Earth as viewed from the moon would have appeared full. As the lunar phase moved into Waxing Crescent by 13 Sep 99, Earth as viewed from from the moon would have appeared Waning Gibbous.

I'll bet they weren't thinking about that when they were making it... more like, is this shot going to work... is this programme going to work...

Still, very interesting info. Puts the show in the real world.

Blimey we aren't having a pop at the producers because the phase of the Moon was depicted incorrectly now are we? Next you'll be claiming the model of the Moon they made doesn't match the real one crater for crater!

No the "real" Moon doesn't match the model!!
Missing a bloody great hole on the dark side for one thing...obviously a NASA fake to hide the fact the original moons gone missing

In breakaway, when the moon goes skiting off, I remember seeing a clip where there was a really lame red glow effect. Has anyone else seen this? I cant remember if its on the actuall episode...

It's not in the actual episode but should've been. I don't think it was lame at all.

It can be found on the extras disc in the Network Set, for one. I thought it well done for the time.

Any links to it apart from the DVD? The moon was clearly fake. Its the only think that really annoys me about any of the shots. Not quite sure how it gets through when the moon surface sets and the outside shots from moonbase windows, and infact the outside shot of the base all look perfectly reasonable. That moon though... very ordinary. The scenes always look much better when they use real moon shots.

Wow, that looks the deal, though you'd expect some lighter colours in there to show the "rocket motor" effect. I guess they didn't need it, but its a shame it was cut.

The shot is actually post explosion as things are settling down. There just a rumbling and we see the moon gliding away from camera.

I, for one, wish they'd have left that shot in. Looks pretty good to me.

That picture illustrates what I don't like about the moon model. Those raised crater edges look to large. If we can see them from outer space we should either see more (because the small number of craters we can see makes it look like there are only a few craters on the moon.) or we should little or nothing of their texture (a bit like the globes of the moon you can buy which give a hint of height/depth of terrain, but function mostly as a map.)

Oh, now I get it. Now that you point it out, yeah, a few of those craters are too large. I wonder if that's what caused the scene to get chopped?
Still, if they could have toned down just a few of those large-rimmed ones, I think it would have made a nice shot. (I still like it, personally, but I can see the distraction element of it 'as is.')

Thank you I'm glad someone understood what I was trying to say. That was the trouble with the model all through the shows. Made it look like a bad model rather than the moon

Ah, at long last, Tony42, someone understands you. I'm still waiting for that time to come in my life...
