Default Hello from new member CalgaryAlphan

Hi All,

I'm sure I know quite a few of you already, but wanted to put my first post on this forum up here as an intro...

I'm Robert Wood, I've been a fan of 1999 since the 70s and have been involved in fandom since 1984. I won't list too many things, but briefly: I'm very proud to have worked with Barry Morse and Zienia Merton on their memoirs ("Remember with Advantages", and "Anecdotes & Armadillos", respectively), and this past summer I organized the "Another Con, Another Place" convention here in Calgary. I still have one or two 1999 projects up my colour-coded sleeve, so stay tuned...

I've been aware of this forum for a long time, but I always thought it was strictly a modeling forum (not that there's anything wrong with that! - I have my own collection of models, and model-kits-yet-to-build), but having taken a longer look around I see the variety and depth of the group and I'm very impressed. Looking forward to participating!

2008 was a very difficult year for me with the loss of Barry Morse, who was quite simply the greatest man I've ever known. With the additional tragic losses of Johnny Byrne and Derek Wadsworth our 1999 family has lost some of its finest members. Let's hope that 2009 will be kinder to us all.

Onwards & Upwards, Alphans!
Bob

Hi Robert -

Totally agree with you about Barry, Johnny and Derek. All great losses.

Look forward to hearing more about your other 1999 projects.

Welcome! I have both the books you mention along with Pulling Faces, Making Noises and have enjoyed reading them.

The forum is most eclectic. I am most certainly not a modeler but it has never been held against me. Glad you joined up!

Nice to hear from you, Bob. Sounds like you have a lot to offer this forum.

Many of us felt the passing of Barry Morse quite acutely; I believe only a handful of us here ever met him, but there was something about him that inspired great affection.

Thanks for the welcome's everybody -

Cricket - thanks for mentioning that you have Barry and Zienia's books (and both versions of Barry's - well done!) - it's always great to hear from people who've read them. Barry's book was a 10-year project, which is astounding. I never want a project to take 10 years again, but I wouldn't trade a moment of it!!

Nice to see you here Bob!

I don't mind admitting I cried when I learned of Barry's passing. Have you still got the Eagle cutaway poster you got signed at Breakaway?

And here's to 2009 being better for all of us!

Welcome, Robert!

Thanks to technologies not even thought of when Space: 1999 was on the air, we're now able to access a forum like this from the comfort of our homes and make friends and share stories across the globe. This is a terrific group of people here and I'm sure you'll find much to interest you.

CaptainJamie - yes I do! In addition to that Eagle cutaway poster signed by the guests at Breakaway in 1999 I also have a Destination: MBA poster signed by the guests from 2000 in NYC. Lots of great memories tied to all those signatures. They're hanging along with some other signed treasures (and the original Keith Wilson design drawing for the Stun Gun, which I bought at the Con in 2000.) I see them virtually every day.

Now I'm looking through all my photos of the 1999 and 2000 cons. Happy happy memories

I have known Bob since 1995 and he is the authority on Space:1999. He is a great artist and great author. He is a true Renaissance man.
