Well I wasn't expecting much after hearing that there was no money for sets or effects and wondering how old they would all look, but after a slow few minutes I was enjoying it. Seemed quite fine to me, different feel but then again the show has often changed during the years. Personally I thought only series 2 & 3 & 6 were consistantly brilliant while all the rest had there good and bad episodes. This new one was perfectly acceptable with the only drawback being running shorter due to the advert break - which suddenly jumped in without warning, will probably prefer to watch all 3 parts in one go. More please.

Red Dwarf hasn't impressed me so far. Slow and largely untroubled by humour. Can't help feeling the cousin of the 'despair squid' is behind all this. I'll probably buy the DVD when it's released and maybe it will appear more coherent in a single episode.

Tonight's Dr.Who, by comparison, was good. Not a classic, but entertaining, funny and scary when needed. Ms. Ryan acquitted herself well - could see her and the Doctor working together again.

By the way, have they just solved the transport gridlock in London in time for the Olympics? Hold tight!

My OH and I sat through 'new' Red Dwarf 1 & 2 without even getting near to laughing... very slow as has been pointed out, also very predictable.
A real shame as we were both looking forward to it

OK, now I've seen the second episode, how's it going?
Down the pan.

The first half of episode 2 seemed to be one long advert with product placement fairly knocking you in the face.

The second half seemed to be a TV version of Blade Runner references.

Apart from a couple of Kryten/Rimmer exchanges, the whole thing moved about as slowly as the bus the four of them took. Tired performances, tired direction, tired script.

RD - RIP?

I wasn't expecting a great deal from either, but they have both entertained this weekend.

As far as I see it you will never recapture the original dynamic of Red Dwarf after such a long break, and on such a tight budget. I'm just pleased to see something other than the usual dross on TV over Easter and grateful to all concerned for making the effort.

I'll be discussing it with Mr Barrie next Friday...

The first couple of seasons of Red Dwarf looked like they had about the same budget as a single episode of a 1980s episode of Doctor Who but were none the worse for it because of the quality of the scripts.

Ditch the CGI and the video processing they use to make the recording look like film, pay the money saved to Norman Lovett, and get Grant and Naylor to kiss-and-make-up.

For me, Red Dwarf worked best as Steptoe and Son in space. There might have been some laughs since that format went, but the spirit of the whole thing was severely diluted.

Yes: you are on the cace's, I think Grant and Naylor to get back to righting a script for a movie as soon for Red Dwarf, but make it in the UK, not the US,look at The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie, the biggy's load of crap make for year's.

Well last part done and dusted thank god, probably the worst IMO. It's about as far as you can get from the original concept of Red Dwarf, which I believe was built solely on brilliant characterization. That's where the real comedy came from in this show I think. That's all long gone. RIP RD.

I have to agree - my wife and I used to watch this show religiously all those years ago. It's a shame the magic's not there anymore. She looked over to me when we were watching and just shook her head. 'No where near as good as it used to be.'

Part 3...

Oh what the hell, I'm not even going to bother. Those who saw it will know what I'm going to say. Those who haven't yet, well, I don't want to spoil it any further than I already have.

Nice to see Chloe briefly - she's aged well.

I think it's fair to say that Doug Naylor's pissed in the well once too often.

Agree wholeheartedly. The best things to come out of RD, IMHO, are:-

1/ Queeg

2/ Better than Life

3/ Tongue Tied

3 & 1/2 The Rimmer Song

The writers forgot Holly's last words from "Queeg":

"And the moral of the story is, appreciate what you've got, 'cos basically I'm fantastic!"

Kryten's all well and good, but Holl was there on day one. There was an ever-so-steady slide after Series 2, but last night we saw a vertical drop.

"Back to Earth" felt like working day at the museum - just look at all the sitcoms they tried to resurrect after a long break and try to think of one that stuck.

Just pray Ronald D Moore doesn't get his mits on it!
