Default Not their most shining moments...

How about a place to post pictures or information that might be bloopers or just things that weren't done too well?

How about these for a start. Paper Eagles

Two great cringe-worthy examples.
The photo cut-outs aren't too convincing, are they? Little did the effects team know that 35 years later their work would be so closely scrutinized in high def and screen captures. I still think they managed to create some amazing stuff but it should be fun to see some more of these "blooper" shots.
Keep 'em coming...

Oh I definitely agree they did amazing work when you consider what they had to work with, the time, the money and all.

I'm not sure that they are what you can call 'bloopers' i.e. mistakes. They are simply film tricks that did not completely work.
The top photo explosion was good enough but I agreed that the bottom one didn't work at all.

As a point of interest the top photo is the same one as seen hanging in mid-air in the 'Guardian of Piri', where Alan docks with it - used because they didn't have two same-sized Eagle models at the time.

As for a proper blooper then 'Guardian' has a clear one that has only just been pointed out to me - when Koenig lands with Alan for the first time to survey the planet they are surrounded by other Eagles - they should be the only ones there!! Either they didn't film the right shot or the editor made a mistake and used the wrong one.

Well I guess it worked because I never knew one of those eagles was a cut out. I believe I saw the above sequence of the eagle with the launch pad on one of the A&E DVDs.

This is a screencap from Matter of Life and Death. I know that when they generated these scenes in 1974 they had no idea that people would be scrutinizing these scenes 37 years later in High Definition. Maybe they take if as a compliment since people are still interested in their work. Anyway, if you look at the left front landing pod I believe it looks like a cut out to me. What do you think?

Now i can see it, and nice catch BTW,
never saw that one before.

I always thought they were using the real studio scale models
and placing the explosive charges between them and the camera,
giving us the illusion that the model was exploding for real.

Then i saw a deleted SFX shot from the Last sunset, it is included
in the Blu Ray release. when Helena shoots a laser to a almost buried
eagle, the eagle explodes in the episode. In the deleted scene,
you can see a big chunk of the cut-out eagle flying in the air.

Unfortunately I can't scan stuff at present as I need a new Printer, however there are those publicity shots of Brian in Bray's model shop, one of which has him "airbrushing" the 44" Cockpit-there's the 44" body on the desk,22" Eagle, both sizes of roundhouse,11" Eagle plus a cut out photo Eagle and a cut out photo of a shoulder pod propped against a spray can.

Oddly they seem the wrong way round tho-tho the pics printed correctly.

I believe I've seen that picture. It's a famous behind the scene photo. I'll have to see if I can find it and post it.

That one of the rescue Eagle is so bad, that when we tried to spoof it, our cut out Eagle from my old, crappy printer actually looked better! You can see that shot in the UFO:1999 To All That Might Have Been video on Youtube.

Yeah the one where the eagle is hanging (literally) over the launch pad looks like the cardboard cut out was drooping in the middle too. Oh well.

I assume they did a cut out of the landing pod
only to let the smoke to be spread easily ?
Or do you think the whole eagle behind was a cutout also ?

Nice pic, thanks for sharing
