I've been hinting at something big taking place on April 18th. Well, the day has arrived and the announcements can be made.
Space1999.org (http://www.space1999.org ) is announcing a brand-new, non-commercial publishing imprint, dedicated to electronic books (eBooks)! Furthermore, there's more than one publishing imprint! We've partnered with the Space:1999 Fiction Archive (http://www.space1999fiction.com ) for releases, too! See: http://www.space1999.org/ebooks For those with questions, I'll recommend you read the various Q&As and FAQs posted on the site above *before* asking. Hopefully we've covered enough of the basics. Admittedly, we've posted a lot of information to absorb. This has been a literal labor of love, intended to uplevel fan fiction from plain ol' text files into a more refined presentation format. Every eBook is 100% free--no fees, no digital rights management (DRM) encryption. This is a fan-based, not-for-profit endeavor. We are not competing with professional Space: 1999 publishers, such as Powys Media and Eagle One Media. Our eBooks are purely amateur efforts. For anyone considering a future submission of their work, know this: Every author retains full ownership of his/her original work, which they can opt to protect with a Creative Commons license. While our publishing imprints design, package and distribute the works, each author has the comfort of knowing their work still belongs to them. The first three eBooks to make their debut are: "A New Moon Over Bajor" by Ariana (re-issue from 1999) "Breakaway, Part II" by Matt Butts (re-issue from 2000) "What Lies Beneath" by Michael Faries (new release) See: http://www.space1999.org/ebooks for details, including overviews, interviews and free downloads! NOTE: If you have a Space: 1999 web site and would like to become involved, or host your own copies of the eBooks, please do! Just follow our Open Content Model (OCM). The details can be found on Space1999.org. We firmly believe content should be shared and enjoyed by a larger audience. We're even publishing an eBook Development Kit for free download if you want to create your own independent publishing imprint! More announcements will be forthcoming in the months ahead, including the next line-up of eBook releases. This has been four months in the making. Following the recent Eric Bernard re-edited episode releases, new Space: 1999 web sites and discussion groups coming online, plus the product announcements by Powys Media and Product Enterprise, this remains an exciting time for Space: 1999 fans! Keep the spirit alive and continue to celebrate this wonderful TV series! Michael Space1999.org |

"The final episode of the TV series, 'The Dorcons,' took place within the Space: 1999 universe on April 18, 2006," explained Editor-in-Chief Michael Faries. "And on that day, we're looking forward to presenting freely-available, fan-inspired stories and literary creations, such as we're showcasing within our line of downloadable, digital eBooks." The Space1999.org website has chosen the two electronic book (eBook) formats for its titles: Adobe Reader (.pdf format) and OpenOffice via OASIS's Open Document (.odt format). Digital Right Management (DRM) will not be used to lock or limit viewings. "Space1999.org promotes an open content model where other fan sites can utilize our web content," Faries added. "Our imprint allows authors and illustrators to retain the rights to their content while presenting their works in a more stylized, refined way, plus serve as a distribution channel." "After years of celebrating the TV series via it's Internet web site, Space1999.org is looking forward to a new era in non-commercial electronic print publishing. It's an exciting opportunity to be in a position to bring those two worlds closer together. We're also looking to the creative talent that exists online and hope to showcase more of their original Space: 1999-inspired works to a wider audience. We're hoping to expand this concept to various other fandoms this year." The web site imprint will publish its first two titles - "Space: 1999 - Breakaway Part II" by Matt Butts and "Space: 1999 - What Lies Beneath" by Michael Faries - in April 2006. Additional titles will be announced as they become available. An eBook Development Kit is also available from the Space1999.org site for free download. All people, places and things Space: 1999 are copyright Granada Ventures. Space: 1999 is a Gerry Anderson Production. Space1999.org makes absolutely NO ownership of claim. "Space1999Fiction.com already accepts submissions from fan writers," said Emma Burrows of The Space:1999 Fiction Archive, "but this is an opportunity for their works to receive the kind of personal attention traditionally reserved for conventional publishing and fanzines. Thanks!
Be sure to check out the "A New Moon Over Bajor" eBook, too! Even if you're not a DS9 fan, or mixed about a cross-over story between Star Trek and Space: 1999, it's still a very well-crafted novel. Michael |

3 years since the announcement of this thread was made, and I've only just read about this (having been reading through some old threads) - so I have now downloaded 'A New Moon Over Bajor', 'Breakaway Part 2' and 'What Lies Beneath' - many thanks and so glad they are still available - a whopping 528 pages of material in total. Shall look forward to reading them.
Anyone else read them (probably - yes as they've been available for 3 years) and if so, what did they think of them ? |

Breakaway, Part 2 is very well done. It is in script format which took me a while to 'get the hang' of reading, but the characterization and events are spot on.

Yes, what cricket said, though the format was no problem for me. (I'd read Martin's transcripts at the Catacombs many times before the dvds were released, so I was quite used to the format from that.)
What Lies Beneath is pretty good, too, and helps explain a few mysteries about Alpha technology levels. It's also good because of its 'lower decks' angle, focusing on minor characters.
