Scratch built SS 2001 Moon Bus

Being involved in a project like this must be a history lesson too having to research old kits and materials.

Did you make any discoveries that you could share?

Fantastic work I loved the model work of 2001.

Most of the research into the donor kits was already done on a very long thread over at Hobbytalk. That's where this project started and I met misterggg whose help has been indispensable. The one small contribution I made was figuring out two pieces of detail that are on the landing gear. I recognized them as parts from the Revel Gemini kit but they were too small to be 1/24th scale. Someone pointed out though that Revel also made a 1/48th scale so that was it.

Thanks stargazer,

I did not go into a lot of construction details on that first leg so I will with the other two. Each leg needs six pistons for a total of eighteen all together. I turned the master cylinder out of acrylic years ago. I made two molds to speed up the casting process. The parts are poured with the aluminum rod in bedded in them. I know the rod in the photo is too short. It's just there as a example.

Great work; it started before I joined the group! Pleased to see it has got going again. Thanks for sharing the build details.

The major components for the other two landing gear are done as far as the putty, sand, prime, repeat operation is concerned. I've also finished the ten connector vanes that hold the pontoon to the plate for one of the gear assemblies. The vane blanks were cut over sized then sanded to correct length and width using a couple of jigs. The parts were then marked with lines that helped to determine the top and bottom angle cuts. The angles were rough cut then sanded to fit the plate and pontoon.

The center vane had to be modified because the slot it fit into was not as deep as the others. The hole for the piston was in the way.

Added more detail. I've started to use bits of tape to hold the parts in place prior to gluing. Once the part is in the proper position the tape acts as a hinge so the part can be folded back, a drop of super glue is applied, then the part is pressed into place.

The rest of the detail has been added and the two diagonal struts made. That brings this leg assembly to the same point as the first.

Truly exceptional...

What wonderful craftsmanship. Will be looking forward to seeing more progress on this model - it's going to look beautiful.

Kindest regards

Patrick

Thank you Patrick

I got the two legs mounted. There is still some tweaking to do to get them to sit flat but that can't be done for a while. On to the third and last leg now.

I finally got the third and last (thank goodness) landing gear assembled. There is still work to be done on them but that can be done later. Now on to another part of the build. Not sure what it's going to be yet.

The side windows are finished except for some sanding and final fitting. I ran a few test pieces to check the template. There was some shimming need to get the size of the opening correct but that is to be expected. I'm very happy with the results.

Got the eight stanchions done. These were a lot easier than I thought they'd be, just five cuts on the table saw. Sorry but I didn't get pictures of every step.
