Seaview Model, Polar Lights or Moebius?

I am thinking of tackling model making again. Something I haven't done in a few years but something I have been wanting to do for a while now. I would love to build my own 44" Eagle but that will be a future project. Another model I have always wanted was the SSRN Seaview. I have looked at the Polar Lights and the Moebius version. My question is what is your opinion of these 2 models? Any one of them better than the other? I look forward to reading your advise from experts like you. Thank you in advance.

Seaview kit

The Big Moebius Model will take some beating, I know it's expensive but it is real quality. Add in the paragrafix brass etch kit and decals and you really are talking a master model.

The kit is available from a few dealers like Hannants and we stock the Paragrafix kits in the Captain's Store.

Take your time it will not disappoint you. Ask here if you need any help. I have one on a shelf in my office begging to be built. If you can wait until after New year I will join you in a build up. :D

Moebius have sent Mike (Sci-Fi & Fantasy Models) Reccia a test shot of the movie version for review, I am sure he is planning to publish his review in the new year. Consider how you will display this kit after it is built at 37" long it's a big sucker and very impressive.

I want to light mine internally and externally with as much detail as possible throughout, it's a great subject worthy of the works. :D

Yeah when I get mine it will have to be closer to this coming summer. I was thinking of adding lights to mine as well.

I have both the large Seaview, and the small one, forget the small one its rubbish, the large one is the way to go,i second Bernies Brass kit for it by Paragrafix its spot on,Voodoo are no longer shipping the lighting kit to the UK,you will have to get that via Cultman,or may be Bernie will stock them soon.

It used to be £79 UK for the original kit i think its about £110 now which is a bit of a price hike, but i think its worth it.
take time with the joins as its in 2 halfs,i ran into a paint issue which caused me to shelf it,Mike Recca covered a review of this kit and build up in Sci Fi Modeller som months ago now.

Can but concur with both contributions, the Moebius is the only serious contender, you do have an option of the smaller Moebius but really the big one is a dream to build.
If you don't like seam filling then maybe the upcoming 8 window movie version may be more to your liking as the forward hull is all one piece where as the 4 window version has a choice of framed/unframed windows hence choosing which one to go with, some people had problems with the seams showing through no matter how much they filled and sanded.

Seems to me like I have seen model kits that were larger than 39 inches? Is that true or do you think those were custom builts?

You may be referring to the DeBoer or Rick Tesky Builds which are customs. not sure if still available but if so would certainly cost 5 X the price of the large moebius,

It should be noted that the Polar Lights which was a remake of the old Aurora kit is too short.
You would need 2 of the kits to correct the problem.

Picked up the Moebius Seaview at local model zone for £79.95 !
Just seems a bit daunting as the finish would need to be great
so might take a while to get round to it

I was thinking the same thing. It's been a while since building and I know how I would want this model to be just perfect.

the windows on the tv seaview looked wrong to me, they go up too much at the top corners am in the process of rectifying mine

thease measurements were taken from the original seaview by dave merriman so i would doubt if any re work on this model is needed he is a god when it comes to submarines just take a look at his web site

I'll have to remember that because the tv version is the one I would want to build. I was going to use the 8 1/2 foot model windows with the frames and the 17 foot missile hatch which has I believe 20 hatches instead of 16.

With at least three scale models of Seaview made plus a few close up sections there are bound to be differences. Pick whatever model floats your boat, so to speak, and go after that.

Personally I really prefer the 4 windowed 8 footer. The largest Moebius kit is superb and very accurate to the 17 footer "miniature"

Interestingly they have released a version of the TV 4 windowed sub in the same scale as the old Aurora kit of the Movie 8 windowed miniature.

Here is the nose section from the 8 footer, basic difference? This one has window frames.....

Yeah I like the 8 footer the best of all the models from VTTBOTS. I wish they would have taken care of it and kept it intact for display.
