SHADO Mobile

Crash&Bern

Alphans
Ok this is my first project post here so I hope you like it.

It's a SHADO Mobile to 1/72 scale so about 80mm long, each square on my cutting board is 1cm x 1cm to give a visual clue to it's size (or lack of).

So this is where I'm at so far... at the begining it looked a bit like a Star Trek shuttle

That's Excellent detail and mastery of polystyrene sheet Bern, love the way you curved it for the upper forward body.:thumbup:

There's a great UFO episode where 3-4 Mobiles are taking on a U-FO that's crashed in a lake somewhere in the midlands.

Thank you kindly gents, the SHADO Mobile's always been a favorite of mine too.
Oddly enough I didn't see that many UFO episodes as a kid, it wasn't repeated as much as Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet or Stingray but the Dinky Mobile was at the top of my best toy list!
There's been a bit of progress today but no pics I'm sorry to say... I'm such a tease

Looking forward to see it completed.. bravo!!

Me too :D

Thanks Stefano...it's getting there. The main superstructure is done just needs detailing now so it's time to start on the chassis.

Thanks DD

Well all the plates are cut for the chassis and if I wasn't such a clumsy klutz they'd all be assembled too but following an unfortunate accident involving a full bottle of Liquid Poly with no lid on I now have no solvent and a house that smells like a glue sniffer's paradise

As there's no model shops around here anymore I've had to order some off of fleabay so no sticking for me until some time next week now... here's some pictures while I go off and sulk :(

Neat, neat work.....

In amongst all the vehicle and spacecraft bodies and components being poured, moulded and filled, it's fascinating to see such neat work in styrene card. The Mobile is such a well-designed vehicle, just right in length, width and height, and I'm sure you'll end up with a great looking example.

I too have suffered a liquid poly spillage in the past - it's not just the smell, it's the fact I paid nearly a fiver for the bottle and lost about two-thirds of it when it tipped over. Anyway, please continue to delight us with precision-cut styrene card and lovingly crafted Mobile components. Looking forward to seeing the wheels and tracks as well.

Kindest regards

Patrick

Thanks Patrick, that's very kind of you to say.

The Mobile is actually pretty straight forward to do in styrene sheet as it's more or less all flat panels.
There may be some pouring to follow as I'd like to do all three Mobiles plus the SHADO control version and really can't be bothered to scratch build four of them so RTV and PU resin will probably come to the rescue.

When my liquid poly arrives I'm going to cut a big square of ply and glue the bottle to it as this will be the third one I've knocked over, hopefully a big base will make it more stable.
I've already started on the wheels and have a plan for the tracks but there's not much to show until I can stick some bits together.

All the best
Bern

Finally my solvent has arrived so I've been getting on with the wheels.

As you can see I had to halve the wall thickness of the styrene tube, it's a slow and laborious process sanding it by hand but with only 0.5mm wall thickness there's no quick way without damaging the tube.

The wheel centers were made from laminated 20 thou styrene sheet and a piece of 4mm styrene tube for the center.

I'll be using this one as a master and casting 8 replicas, I'll also need to come up with a ribbed version with a central gear for the drive sprocket and idler.

Thanks SM although I think my missus may disagree with you about the patience bit!

I pretty much only work in 1/72 scale so find a big magnifying glass helps these days.

While I was waiting for the solvent to arrive I thought I'd start cutting plastic for my next project... no prizes for guessing what it is

Thanks Stefano :D

Main part of the chassis is done it just needs the under cab portion doing and I've added some supports inside the body for the chassis to sit on.

It would be great if you had molds made of it and offered it to others. I'm sure many model builders would love to have one.Put me at the top of the list:yes:
