Space:1999 Blu-Ray Frame Analysis

I presume I'm not the only person analysing the Blu-Ray disks in detail?

I thought a thread for general observations may be appropiate.

I've been grabbing each frame. That's over 72 thousand images per episode. And now viewing them full screen through software that allows fast forwarding and reversing by scrolling with the mouse wheel.

I'm getting blisters on fingers through constant scrolling the wheel but at least I'm enjoying the new depth of immersion.

THIS THREAD CONTAINS
PRODUCTION SPOILERS

I've always been aware of the commlock screen visors appearing the wrong way round in some of the episodes (high side should be the same side as the keypad).

I've always presumed that this was because they had been falling off throughout the series and maybe were glued back on the wrong way round. There is a scene in a Matter of Life and Death where a commlock is on Helena's desk without a visor.

I was surprised to see that an early Breakaway scene (from first day of filming?) shows the Alpha-nauts with reversed commlock visors, indicating that they were produced that way round. But this conflicts with the 'hero' one.

I'm wondering at some point if all the commlocks were built that way first,
and then changed during filming. A lot of them had the bezel reversed
in the early episodes.

One thing that stood out to me when I first watched the Blu-rays was the an area of lighter space around the 'S' of the Space:1999 logo. I guess this is to do with the newly composited titles elements:-

Brightened for emphasis:-

Inverted for clarity:-

If they were produced the opposite way round to what became the norm, it would make sense to change it as pressure from the actors sitting or bending would force the bezel to come off. But again why was the Hero (working model) produced opposite to the others?

If they were changed around, they were't all done - A matter of life and death (planet scene), Koenig and helena bezel, one way, sandra the other. And Roy Dotrice is wearing this designated 'K' commlock during the 'This is your Life' Earthbound rehearsals:

In the travel tube scene above,
seems that Koenig is getting a 'm' commlock.

Then in Main Mission, Bergman has a 'h' commlock:

And 5 seconds after, Koenig has the same one ? :

:wtf:

When Koenig steps out of the travel tube, his commlock bezel has been reversed but bergman's hasn't. There must be a screwdriver kit in that white travel bag.

And yet by the time they walk to Main Mission, Koenig's is back where it started and Berman's has changed!

the same girl as on the monitor?:-

Does anyone know (or can decipher) this list - from an alcove in the front, right hand, Main Mission entrance? :-

Yes, that does look like the same woman on the monitors. Cool! In the episode, there's at least one other 'monitor woman' with straighter hair... she appears on the monitor after the Breakaway event, holding an apparently injured shoulder, and the camera (the image on the monitor) is askew.

Some behind-the-scenes pics on the Region 1 A&E DVD sets, of all places, has a close-up of that food & drinks dispenser in the Main Mission alcove, with all the text readable. I'll see if I can find it...

This is cropped from a Breakaway publicity still. Fancy a guess at the designated letter of Helena's commlock?

That photo's in colour? I've only ever seen it in B&W.

I think I'll be investing in a Blu-Ray player as soon as possible...

This looks so much like a 'microfiche' machine.
The only one I've met in my life was the one at the local library when I was a kid. I used it to search for Space:1999 books!

Hey, I was just at The Catacombs looking up that very shot! (My DVDs are on loan to someone... oops!) It's of the Space-o-Mat liquid dispenser.
EDITED TO ADD: Thin Veg? Mm-mm. Sounds nummy. :hungry:

Any Idea What this Is?

Here is a screencap I got from catacombs (thank you Martin). Anyway I have this as my computer wallpaper and notices an extra bar and something over the left rear landing pod. Any idea what it is?

The air canisters used for the lift-off/exhaust effect
were located in the passenger pod.

With this one missing, i think they made another temporary setup
to get the same effect.

In Dragon's Domain you can see a black tube going through
the eagle's spine from the front cage to the rear cage,
it is less visible than the shot above

nice catch, first time i see this one

Thanks Martin!
Sort of names you would expact to see on Apollo mission food packs.
I've placed some of them on this weeks food shopping list - now expecting a phone call from the wife from Tesco's!
