Space 1999 Environments in Virtual Reality

I have been working on a Virtual Reality project that started off as a model of the Eagle Transporter but has now expanded to include the Launchpad and Main Mission. The project is a work in progress with new elements being added as time permits.

The latest additions to the Main Mission environment include a Liquid Dispenser in the entry alcove and a detailed model of the Comms Post in Commander Koenig's office.

The VR project is compatible with the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets and has a permanent home on itch.io: https://novaclade.itch.io/space1999vr
You can see a YouTube walk through here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dUxCcTxRq0

You can get a feel for what to expect from the VR experience by looking at the screen shots on the project home page but because they look so cool, here are some watercolour renditions of the 3D model as it stands now :)

Here are some more graphic filters that I applied to my 3D renders. This one is in the style of comic book illustrations and feels very retro to me

Along with the YouTube walkthroughs, I thought I would post some 360° panoramas. Just click and drag to pan around the image...

P.S. Try looking at the panoramas with your smart phone, the motion sensors make navigating the panorama feel much more interactive :)

Hi there everyone, I have another incremental update to my “Space: 1999 VR” project. This time I’ve added the labels and electronic equipment to the computer walls in the Main Mission set. It’s amazing how much more colourful the environment is now :)

You can download the VR experience from here: https://novaclade.itch.io/space1999vr
You can view a 360° panorama here: https://kuula.co/share/7q9MP?fs=1&vr=0&thumbs=1&chromeless=0&logo=0
And you can see a YouTube walkthrough here: https://youtu.be/WLBJPF3fiTE

I recently added a small diorama model of the Main Mission set to my Space 1999 VR project which led me to doing some plan view renders of Main Mission and commander Koenig's office. The images turned out pretty cute so I thought I would post them here. :)

Hi there everyone, my “Space: 1999 VR” project has most of the major elements in place now so I thought this would be a good time to share the relevant links…

You can see the latest YouTube walk-through here:

If you know anyone at all who has a Virtual Reality headset, I encourage you to try out the VR experience. The sense of presence is amazing and the opportunity to see the Eagle Transporter, Launch Pad, and Main Mission set in one to one glory is well worth the effort :)

This is brilliant. Thanks for sharing; going to try this out asap.

Have you considered adding this to Sansar?

EDIT: I've tested it a little bit, and found that I am unable to turn around; considering that I use a seated position for VR 100% of the time, I am sorely missing controls in WMR to use the the analog joysticks to turn left/right and walk forward/backward. The touchpads should allow the same, but in increments.

Teleporting works, but only in one direction; would be nice if you could rotate your view before teleporting.

Other than than, standing next to a life-size Eagle is a childhood dream come true - this is wonderfully realized in VR. That said, are you going to bring some interior to the Eagles as well?

Thanks.

Hi rrohde,

I did try Sansar at one point but I don’t remember much about it. SteamVR Home is another option but my project relies on baked static lighting which adds many gigabytes to the built project size. I’m not a game developer and at the moment I’m flat out just trying to get all this working inside the Unity game engine. If I was to try and import these models into Sansar, I have a feeling that I would have to leave out a lot of the features that I’ve gotten working in the Unity project.

I can see why experiencing the VR environment in a seated position would make it difficult to turn around but unfortunately I don’t really know how to add joystick turning to my VR project. I use a set of VR tools called VRTK and one option that I’ve been wanting to try is something called “World Grabbing”. With this option you can fine tune your position in the world and also rotate it simply by grabbing the empty space around you. If you have ever tried ‘Rec Room’, I imagine this would be similar to how they let you rotate the world by grabbing it. Thanks for reminding me to give this a try :)

The new version of VRTK (which I am yet to implement) seems to have combined rotating your view with the teleport action but to be honest, I really don’t like it. It takes away from the immediacy of moving from place to place and feels very disorienting because it resets your spatial frame of reference each time you do it. Hopefully the World Grabbing option does the trick :)

When I originally started working on the 3D model of the Eagle Transporter I made sure to size it so that I can include a correctly proportioned interior. I don’t think I will ever be able to model the interior of the cockpit but the passenger module is a different story. I’ve been wanting to have a go at modeling the underground hangar but the Eagle interior is a great option too.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Thanks for the reply. :)

World grabbing seems to only be a valid option in tight virtual spaces, and it really worked well in a International Space Station VR experience I tried before; however, walking around in open spaces really requires the VR controller's joysticks/touchpads to work as intended.

Walking around Main Mission or an Eagle would have to be done using VR walking - not grabbing or teleporting, imho.

Your already awesome 3D environment would be totally worth it to research how to enable the VR controllers to get that implemented. :)

I wasn’t thinking that World Grabbing was going to be a solution to movement in general. It would only be used to fine tune your position or to rotate the world. You are still going to have to teleport to move around. I had a cursory look at my options with regard to Touchpad movement just last week but my environments are designed for you to be able to teleport up and down stairs, up and down the launchpad and all over the top of the Eagle and surrounding buildings. I have no idea how I would implement this sort of free movement with anything but the teleporter which is why I was thinking that for someone in a seated position, you at least have the option to rotate the world by grabbing the empty space around you.

There are many things that I would love to implement but my background is in 3D architectural modeling and I struggle with the coding side of things. I’m slowly getting there and who knows what the next revelation will bring :)

Thanks for the effort. Looking forward to some improvements to the movement.

I totally love the 3D environment already. :)

Hi rrohde,

Thanks to your urging I’ve now added the World Grabbing mechanism to the VR project. You are still going to have to use the teleporter to get around but at least you will be able to move and rotate the world to get up close and personal with difficult to reach places :)

It was difficult finding a good button combination to do what I wanted because all the button actions have already been assigned but I think I came up with a good compromise. You will need to press and hold both Trigger buttons to initiate the World Grabbing mechanism. Hopefully it won’t interfere with the Menu Laser pointer which is initiated with a single Trigger press.

I’m in the middle of researching the Commlock & Stun Gun and I want to get those into the Diorama scene before I do another update. Expect something in a few weeks time :)

Here’s a preview of my version of the Commlock. I managed to get some perspective matches of the Commlock sitting on Koenig’s desk so I think I’ve got the overall dimensions down to within a few millimetres :)

The VR version has a short video running on the display screen and you can interactively change the identification photo between Koenig, Russel, & Bergman. The whole thing is really cute but it’s surprising how it feels smaller than I thought it would be.

The text on the grey label is accurate to the TV show but the blurb under each of the ID photos is a biography that I made up for each of the characters. My text is the same general size as the original but the TV show used boiler plate Letraset copyright information that came straight off the Letraset sheets.
