Studio Scale ANH Star Destroyer Devastator

JAWSMODELS

Alphans
Gday.
Heres another project Im working on inbetween the battlestar.
I want to build the ANH Star Destroyer Devestator as was built for 'A New Hope'.
Some details were later added to the model for 'The Empire Strikes Back' & Return Of The Jedi'.
The added details were mainly on the Starboardside that I have good information was not detailed at all for 'A New Hope'.
I will also build my replca with the coning tower in the upright position rather than the down which it is currently in.
I have also found some parts that are currently missing from the studio model & am looking for some others I have not yet identified.
I have already(with help) found there is over 100 kits used as donors on this model.
Some are the later additions for the starboard side such as the Hasegawa Morser Karl that was not released until after 1980 which gives those parts away.
I have boughtr may kits for this project & continue to buy more weekly(lucky alot are used on the Galactica!)
Reference is scarce of this model so anything anyone might have is more than appreciated.
I am storing all my kit donor parts in seperate plastic containers for casting later(maybe).
I am trying to preserve rare kits for use on other projects with castings.
It becomes quite expensive accumulating old kits for these builds & I have a couple of other large builds I want to achieve.
I have started with a mock up in 1mm styrene & am working from scaled sections from photos of the studio model & matching to kit parts.
Thanks for looking.

SD parts

Morning Jason,

What will you be using for the reactor sphere's, those multi faceted sphere's on sticks left and right above the conning tower?

I found some door knobs that I will be using for my 36" Build when I eventually get started (if I live that long)

Like you I am collecting kits but with a view to representing the detailed areas rather than nailing every part (I can't afford that). I will be trying to recreate all the panel (plate) details, scribe lines and other flat form areas. If you do go ahead and make resin greeblie parts let me know, I would be happy to order them in bulk and keep them is stock for other builders, we are bound to have other join in. :D

I feel a Star Wars section coming on...

Cap'n

Been collecting more parts such as the drawer pulls used for the radar balls & more kits... I now how have all the parts for the Bridge, Neck, Portside Neck, Starboard Side Neck & Rear Structure Walls. I am now working on the Portside Structure Walls & Turrets. I have 85% of this studio model identified(with help from some friends).

Wooops must have psoted that whilst I was resizing my photos to upload.
I am using the correct drwer pulls for the coning towers. They are Belwith Drawer Pulls from 'Menards' I believe. They are 35mm Dianeter. The model is between 51 & 52inches. I say 51inches though. So it is well over 4ft as the stated 3ft. I did plan to cast nearly every part. We'll see how we go.
Im going to cast these with the details added. To build your model at 36inches will be off mate. Sorry. It is well over 4ft which is contradictory to all previous statements on this models dimesnsions. the frame is just over 3ft though.

Captain Sci-Fi

That drawer pull is exactly the one I have :D

Is there a drawing for the bulkhead forms? I would love to CAD a set and publish here

Put me down for any cast parts you make.

I haven't started to build anything as yet so no loss, I will readjust my model to the correct dimensions.

Call me Mr Excited but I have wanted one of these for the longest time.

I have asked Chris to make a special Star Wars section so we can keep all the information in one place.

Anyone else interested in building one?

Hey Captain a Star Wars section sounds great mate.
Glad to see Im contributing to the progression of this great site.
Thanks for the enthusiasm fellas.
I will endevour to keep progressing & updating.
I'll work on the dimensions today Captain.
Am pretty much there for the Head, Neck, & Upper Structure dimensions.
Just a few more printouts & parts lay overs to be sure.
Might even start cutting another mock up today.
The first ones served its purpose.

In my usual job I laser cut plastics, I can also engrave scribe lines in both Acrylic and Styrene....

If I can line map all the panel lines in my CAD programme and work out dimensions for the plate structures, I should be able to make this into kit form, more or less.

I also own a 24" plotter so I can check everything in full scale before we start.... :D

It would be a bit of work but the end result would be worth it. I know that 90% of the work to build an SD is in the detailing with all those greeblies but it would make life so much easier and give a really good head start if the box and plate building was flat packed. It is also perfectly possible to outline positions of all the major components too, If things like the lateral detail trenches were 90% cast in sets with fine details added afterwards then you could knock years off a project like this (something that interests me - ).

Here is what I am trying to get at, pictures are so much easier to understand :D

This CAD plan....

Yields this part cut in 0.5 mm styrene....

Just for fun I decided to "pop" out a few random sections....

You can see small knots of excess material at the corners, I over did things a little and cut too deeply but this was my very first attempt.
I have now developed the process to the point where I can keep registration 100%
The whole scribing process can be performed to a maximum sheet size of 600 x 1000 mm.

This process works just as well for curved parts, I can use this technique for sheet material up to 1 mm thick.
I rubbed a little graphite pencil to show the lines clearer
Further refinement of this process leaves very little excess material on the surface compared to the parts above.

Frame & hulls currently being laser cut at plastic supplier.
Hope to pick them up this afternoon.
If not I won't get them until Monday.........
The frame is also a replica of the original frame structure though mine is being cut from acrylic.
Should look pretty sweet.

Update coming soon.

JAWSMODELS

Alphans
Well unfortunately I wasn't able to pick my acrylics up yesterday but they said Monday they will be ready.
Just can't wait for this.

Ok i picked up the acrylics for the hulls & frame.
They look awsome.
I will post the pictures this afternoon as the files have to be reduced to be loaded at this site..
The frame is an identical replica of the studio model just cut in acrylic rather than the wood.

Red Five standing by.... :D

I love your builds, so really looking forward to this one. The Star Destroyer has to be one of the top designs from the Star Wars universe.

Sorry for the delayed update.
Haven't had much time for builds.
Finally got this off the floor & on to a bench after a big clean up today :wtf:
So here is my Devestator frame cut from acrylics.
Still working on finalising the upper superstructures, bridge & neck aswell as the island pieces on the hulls.
