Studio Scale Mobile Help Line ?

RCnut

Ill take a few pics and post, in a nutshell, its an old tamiya leopard gearbox (pre multifunction unit) uses clutches to turn. I've had to space out the drive wheels using all the components in the pics to get the right spacing between tracks. Anyway at the moment I've got it running on an 8.4 pack and its ballistic so Im putting in a 6 volt pack to limit the top end.
By the way when i cut my tracks down to the right size i didnt include the small track, there is a way to cut them so there all the same size, I'm all for being accurate but sod that.

Astrocat first cited it (on this forum) here. The kit doesn't seem to have a name, but Astrocat also cites the names of some other Faller kits with the same or similar pieces.

Kit also cited on Mark42's site here, along with loads of useful stuff!

All the big UFO models were APPROX. 1/18 scale. I say approx. because they didn't work to
EXACT scales.

44 in Eagle scale

This will have been mentioned before but the Eagles are not 1/24th ,1/48, etc.
They weren't built to any scale as such...they only used the 1/24 Gemini astros for convenience and plainly there are too big
I suspect they just said the Space Models we want one 4 foot, 2 foot and 1 foot...makes sence to me!

update 03.08.08
Studio scale S.H.A.D.O. Mobile information

The Studio Scale model is about 13th scale, we think!
BUT who cares!

Body;
20 ¼ inches long, (tip to tail)
8 inches wide at the top (if it did not curve in)
9 inches wide in the middle of the body (widest point)
The tracks stick out another ¼ inch either side so a total of 9 1/2 inches
The height is probably 6 inches at the most maybe slightly less (at what point?)

Chassis;
Chassis is 4 inch across
Chassis is 16 Inch long, in a straight line berween Tip of rear and top of front. . . it all depends on what you think looks right, read below for wheel base measurments. (another update to follow soon)
Chassis is? Inch high at rear and? Inch high at front (Drive Wheels)
Rear wheel centre is about 13/16ths of an Inch higher than main road wheels.
Spacing between each wheel centre is about 2 ¾ Inches between the front 4 wheels and about 3 1/8th inches between the rear 2 wheels IF THEY WERE ALL IN LINE

FRONT Wheels Are raised very slightly or NOT at all, YOUR choice!
Wheel base is 14 3/16thinches from the centre of the rear wheel measured to the centre of the front wheel in a straight line.
MY MOBILE is 14.5 inches in a straight line so that the track shoe number fits not too tight or slack. . . . i think its best just to lay it out and see what looks right, but remember, a bigger gap for the rear wheel
There are 53 track shoes in each track.

Please see Mark42's web site http://homepages.tesco.net/d.sisson/shadomobile.htm

Other info.
Shado Mobile number plate (224579) and square decals (front and rear) from the Airfix B-29 bomber

The fonts used for SHADO lettering and numbers is "Eurostyle Extended two". contact Andy at absolute-grafix@live.co.uk he can do vinyl lettering no problem at all!
jbot will be making it sometime soon i hope

As far as i can work out, the main "SHADO" letters are in 36pt and the actual mobile numbers are in 80pt (I think) Although these vairy in diferent screen shots!

The crest decal on the rear is from the Kaman Huskie kit
The correct body colour is NOT "Ford Arctic Blue" its JUST WHAT you think it should be. . . . Its up to you. ( I used nissan light blue which is not that bad after a while)
The round things above the rear axles (looking from the rear) are gun turrets from the Airfix B-29 kit.
Gemini retrograde section cross brace piece at the top
Parts to deflect tracks from body work at the rear are made from Tiger Joe shells (I have a few resin copies of these)
I am sure that the interior of the cab lower section is from the Johnny Express truck, which makes you think that the drivers should be from the same. However i am sure that the Tiger Joe and Seaquest figures will work just as well!

Who has spare parts or can supply parts/sections/

JBOT will be supplying decals in the future for various scales of Mobile - - - - update to follow i hope.

Paul Gray, for the Faller window part sets (vents in the body), front suspension, cab roof and all rear detail parts, in fact most of the detail parts required.

I was short of the rear ribbed wheels, so i recast (in two sections) a front sprocket wheel and just sanded off the sprockets. . BINGO!
Any more ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

All this information is collected from the talent on this forum, Shado Driver, Mark42, Dx, Barrington Bond, Dave, JD, Areteesee, JBot, Paul Gray
and so on.

I think it all depends on the price. If it is not that bad, then i don't think you can go wrong with it.

If it is the type of tank with all ribbed wheels then i am sure that folks on here would gladly swap plain ones with you, OR, If it is the type that is short of a couple of ribbed wheels, you can always do what i did (see post above) or just PM me.

I would make a point of checking with him that the tracks are both in good condition!!!!!!

I think the last one i got, the price of the shipping, from the states to here was about $50- - - £25 which was the same as i paid for the tank in the first place. Again, check with him first of all.

Hope that helps

I can’t find the email I got from the paint supplier but he did tell me that Ford Artic Blue was not made until the early 1970s’ !

I have been trying to find references on the internet as to when it was first used on cars but with no luck at all.

Perhaps it was some other car manufacturer that made a similar named shade of blue (BL or Jaguar or. . . . . . .)

If we can find this out, I will be happy to give mine a re-spray over the summer.

Any ideas?

The story I heard was that the mobile was the same colour as Derek's Mk IV Ford Zodiac - possibly the same car that is seen at Heathrow airport in the Secret Service episode 'A Case For the Bishop'. If so, the colour should be easy to match to colours available prior to August 1968.

No The Spv was sprayed the same colour as Derek's Zodiac! Zircon blue

Arctic blue was in circulation in 1968 - 1969.

Hello Sean,

I am sure that many of us here would very much like to see the mould you have.

Any chance of posting some pics please?

Graham

Hello Graham, I will take some pics and post them here

Ford Arctic blue 1968. Derek liked the colour and chose it for the Mobile going over Mike's head as Mike had origionally chosen another colour for it. Did you know that Mike actually detailed all three Mobiles and after they came back from the paint shop, weathered and applied the tape and letrasett detail!

Cheers Sean

Hello Sean,

No, I knew Mike designed the Mobile but never knew he was so involved in the detailing of it.

Hi Graham.

Yes indeed, Mike actually detailed a lot of the models and also weathering was his paticular favourite. Mike works for me in my models shop and we have been very close friends since Derek's death in 1995. Derek and I were good friends and indeed were about to begin making movies together until his untimely death. Hence a lot of Century 21 information was past to me by him and continues to be past to me by Mike and a bunch of origional Century 21 effects crew.

…………, I will be happy to give mine a re-spray over the summer……

This is a MK111 Escort toy but the colour does look about right I think?

The model of the Escort looks quite detailed . . . . . . I wonder if they included all the rust holes under the battery box and the usual goldfish bowel rear lights with the compulsory short circuit when you indicate and brake at the same time? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? that’s when the back end looks more like Las Vegas !
