The Alpha racing jackets?

BrianS

Do they still make, or can you find anywhere, the 'racing jackets' which were worn by some Alphans (as seen in the following photos)?

From what the continuity guide at the catacombs indicates, they were also used in the original Star Wars movies.

Any details (such as brand name or manufacturer, etc) would be helpful.

is that the jacket luke wore at the end when he was getting the big olympic medal from leia but his jacket was tan or leather colored or was it just some kind of leather jacket?

i will have to go back and watch it again but im thinking it was a unique looking jacket like that.

I don't know LA well, but the last time I was there a 'vintage fashion' shop on Melrose Av (between Fairfax and LaBrea, IIRC - seemed like the really 'Paris Hilton' part of town) had a lot of similar jackets for sale - small sizes, though, and over $100 US.

I've seen similar jackets in the videos of Californian pop artistes like Gwen Stefani so you may be well-placed to grab one.

Here in Oz, inner-city hipsters have stripped that sorta stuff from the charity shop shelves - sometimes to reappear in specialist 'vintage' outlets at appalling prices. To find the real 'retro' gems you may need to go to the 'burbs or regional towns.

There was a Guy who made replicas of the jacket Luke wore when he received his medal from Leia. As far as I am led to believe it was the same style of jacket with slight modifications. He posts on the RPF forum as "DAVIDYR1" or something similar. He may be able to hook you up with the colour of jacket that you're looking for.

Yes, the jacket is the yellow one that he wore at the end of Ep 4. (among others)

As to the DAVIDYR1 suggestion, that did lead to a rough copy of the jacket. But he only produced a few of the yellow and was selling them for $400 US!!

So that option is out.

I've looked around LA a bit in the 'vintage' shops (especially along Melrose, but also along the Blvd in the Valley) but with no luck.

Since it was supposedly originally made in England I figured I would ask to see if anyone knew the original manufacturer or the like. Or if there were any leads on used, etc. Even just knowing the brand name or whatever would help with the search.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! :)

What is interesting from the first photo is that there appears to be no set pattern for the wonderful patches we are buying on the three examples the actors are wearing. I wonder if there is a set of "rules" that can act as a guide for people putting costumes together?

My guess is whatever looked cool at the time - more variety makes you think of different training disciplines within Alpha, rather than everyone wearing the same-old same-old.

I guess so, especially if people are able to wear badges from former missions and commands as seems to be the case when you read Martin's info at the Catacombs.

I am loving patches and pins' badges, and am wondering about getting more than I have, but I've nothing to "mount" them on so it will be interesting if you can get any info Brian.

I hope I am able to find some info on the authentic versions.

In the meantime, I've been flipping around to see what contemporary jackets might work as nice alternatives to 'canon' jackets. Here are some I have found. If there are others which people like, please feel free to post them here. :)

I'm thinking something like this might be a workable non-canon substitute, if I can't find an authentic jacket:

Those might work as an unofficial "Series 3" Jacket and I think they would work for that. Looks nice Brian!

As for the older jackets, they were common with motorcycle riders in the UK and Europe (and perhaps Australia as I think I saw a couple in Mad Max) from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s. I don't recall them seeing much use in the states at the time. Star Wars used A LOT of them as several of the Rebels at the Yavin base wore them, some of the aliens did (like poor ole draftsman Panda Baba, see Robot Chicken) and Luke as well. I think it was a deal where safety mandates for cycle racers (and fashion trends) probably forced these things to go out of general use use, allowing costume shops with the Pinewood and Elstree studios (where 1999 and SW were filmed) to pick them up cheap. I would start my search in the UK at least anyway and focus on motorcycle clubs with older members to see if any remember them.

Does look good as a series three jacket. The badges look great photoshopped on.

The Alpha Racing Jackets?

Once I get my space suit done, if I have enough material and the "seamstress" is willing, I might give the season one a go.
Cheers, Kevin

Those look very good :)

I was thinking of doing a Dave O'Reilly (All That Glisters) by having a non standard jacket with Moonbase Alpha patches on it. I have a denim jacket which would be a candidate as well as an RAF jacket (not the uniform tunic but an actual dark blue jacket) which would also be a candidate.
