Thunderbird scaled original Lights?

Captainplaid

Alphans
Hi all Mike here,

On all of the Thunderbird's equipment working surfaces they used multi colored blinking lights.
*Does anyone know what was exactly used and can show an example here?
*Does anyone here have a contact for these be it vintage or modern remakes?

I have been looking on Ebay endlessly with no luck at all so I figured i would put it out there to our collective group?

Best of regards Michael.

Captainplaid: After a long time I have tracked some of these vintage (1970's) lenses down. I have to wait for delivery to evaluate suitabilty. If they are OK I can post one out to you. They should duplicate without too much difficulty.

When they arrive I will take some better photos and measurements. Watch this space :)

Im glad this thread has been brought back up, well done becco.

I still cant find the right sized bulb/panel holder lenzes for my fire engine projects its one thing thats really starting to cheese me off as I cant find anything like them and Im sure theyll be out there somewhere,
its knowing where to look and what the right name for them is.

Im still looking for 1" (approx 35mm) diameter smooth domes in red.

mike Delamar: The lenses I have shown are part of a larger assortment - I doubt there will be 1" plain domes types but in the event there are, then you are welcome to one or two.

I always liked the way that the lights were far too big for the purpose on the police escort cars for the MSP

There are probably thousands of these lights stashed away, around the world and long forgotton in the collections of people interested in electronics, radio, etc. It's unfortunate that someone usually passes away and their children have to bring them to light.

or throw them away in some sad cases Becco. It probably happens a lot, just a silly little light, whod want it? (and here is a forum of people dying to get them! pardon the pun)

Nice one Becco!

I came across one in a pile of old lamps I had from some test instruments at work. Always on the look out on ebay though.

Did you find any red ones, or are you going to copy/tint those ones for your Explosives Truck?

Dave: If the lenses turn out to be suitable I will simply tint a couple for the truck I'm making. That's the best photo I've seen of your explosives truck I've seen to date - did you add the 'atmospheric' effects as postwork.

Thanks Becco, no that is as you see it, no effects. I had a play at a new painted sky background, which turned out much better than I expected. A bit of sand and cement dust finished it off. Oh, and a very cheap digi-camera.

Dave: Oh, ok. It looks like dust in the atmosphere which enhances the image. When I get to that satge I was going to either 'blue screen' (like a green screen) a sky in or print out a sky on several sheets of paper. Not that I'm anywhere close to giving that much thought!

The sky was achieved by buying a sheet of 6X4 hard board, cost less than a fiver from the local DIY outlet.
I had some light blue emulsion left over from painting the bedroom. Slapped this on with a roller. Using some thinned out white enamel, I sprayed some random clouds on it.
All in all took about an hour.

Mike, Just a thought, they may have used a roof light off one of those Japanese battery operated tinplate ambulance /police car /fire chief cars that were popular in the early 60's , i have an ambulance with the light about 1in wide.
This sort of thing below, one's expensive but you get the idea.

I think the "61-CADILLAC-AMBULANCE" was actually used as it came out of ther box in some episodes of Thunderbirds and Captain scarlet. I also think it was modded to look like an "estate car" version for the ambulances!
