It's been a very interesting day today.

First, I got a box from Jim Costello. The panels for the pods have arrived!! Words fail me, they are SO good!! I cannot begin to describe how happy I am!

Second, I cut out the card "fence" for dividing the front part of the mould in two and fixed it in place.

A little plasticine to seal the join, and I can start casting!!

Because it was built by the lowest bidder?

The panel that ends up being used on the teleport makes its first appearance as part of the pilot's "station" in "Cygnus Alpha" (see attached image).

There are lots of different panel designs that appear on the flight deck pods (perhaps a dozen?), but every week the layout is different, I don't think anybody worried about continuity!

There you are, a new hobby - panel spotting!!

That central piece on the seat looks like it would either a) be very uncomfortable or b) some kind of adult - ahem - stimulation mechanism!

a) Yes!
b) Oo-err!!!

If you look at the first three series, the crew DON'T spend much time sitting (or perching) on the seats, they're either on the comfy "sofa" at the front, or they're walking around!

I can't believe it's been over two weeks since I posted any updates about the B7 flight deck station! I've been busy ...

Well, I've now finished making the mould for the chair. The mould sections have been cleaned off, any minor imperfections filled, and the whole thing has been drilled and bolted together.

For the moment, I've shifted emphasis to the base. To make sure I don't go hideously wrong, I'm making a quick quarter-scale model of the whole thing. I can use it to check relative sizes and positions of all the elements (like the central part of the base is the right length, the pods aren't too close to the chair, that sort of thing). I've just got to make the "table" that the pods sit on, then I'll be ordering the wood to build it.

You really go the extra 'spacial'. Do you do all this yourself, or do you have anyone to assist you? I'd think that it would be really hard to handle all of this yourself, considering the size of the mould....

I've been working out what materials I'll need to build the base "master". I've gone for 18mm OSB ("Oriented Strand Board") for the baseplate, with everything else to be cut from 6mm MDF.

I've got my wood, and I've printed and taped together the template for the profile of the main part. You can see the size of it, the quarter-scale version and a 12"/30cm ruler is included for comparison.

I start chopping tomorrow!!

I've been working hard in the workshop and I've now got most of a base! Working with my quarter-scale model as reference, I've created a full-size template, made the two sides from this and built everything up around them.

The central part is fixed together, the "wings" on either side have been cut out but not fixed in place yet (I've got to chamfer the edges, so they fit together properly).

So far, apart from the OSB base board, I've used the best part of two 4x8 foot sheets of 6mm MDF, just over 16 metres of the wooden battening and 218 screws!

It's all really firm and straight, and it's all assembled "dry", no glue.

This is a stunning (re)creation, it really is, it is of real significance in B7 fandom. When you set it all up though, what are you going to use as a background, because with it being so large it is going to have an awful lot of background, which just won't 'fit in' with it. Greenscreen is, I suppose, an option, but let's face it, you're going to have to build the whole flight deck. You know it makes sense.

So you can take it back apart, I expect.

Kevin, thank you! For the moment, it's just a free-standing piece, but now you mention it, some sort of backdrop or background might be in order in the future. As I've said before, if anyone has a spare warehouse or barn they don't want, I'll build the whole thing ...

I'm gonna need a bigger EVERYTHING!! Ah well, I'll worry about that later, that's what "later" is for!

Ham, you're correct. I know screwing and gluing is supposed to make things firmer, but from experience, it's a right old pain if something has to be pulled apart to make an addition or correction. Luckily, all those screws and extra bits of wood for bracing seem to have done the trick, it's absolutely solid, so nothing's going to move about when I start moulding.

Router rampage! I've been busy with my router bits - first, my new 45 degree guided bit to chamfer the triangular side panels, then a "rounding over" bit to curve most of the edges of the main section (there were a few bits the router couldn't do, so I hand-sanded them). With the base board trimmed to shape, the side panels were fitted.

Just one thing - those holes I'd cut for the foot rests ... were they a little too big? Once I'd screwed some wood battens inside and cut out and fitted the 12mm MDF foot-shaped pads, you can see by my tastefully positioned shoe that they are correct. The pads aren't as straightforward as you may think, the outer edges overhang the stand sides!

298 screws later, all the wood fabrication is now complete. I've given the whole thing two coats of MDF primer, and it's all drying off overnight.

Thank you skororo, and my apologies for taking so long to answer your post ... I've been a bit busy, as you'll see!

The plug for the base has gone from the basic bits of MDF to the finished item, and I've just finished making the moulds (they'll be coming off tomorrow).

Another important milestone - I've made a fibreglass test casting of the chair from the moulds I made a while back. This is only one layer of matting thick, and it is quite flimsy. There are some "issues" with it, but these are down to the thinness of the casting. The most important thing is that the moulds work. So, for the first time since the 31st March 1980 (when "Terminal" was originally broadcast in the UK) a Liberator chair exists!!

I think I'll call today "Weary Wednesday"! I trimmed the mould and took it off the plug. Front and back panels were straightforward enough, but the two main ones ... !!! After four hours of careful pulling and wedging, they gave in and came off! I've cleaned up the plug (at least it's in one piece, I thought I was going to "persuade" it with a hammer at one point), and I've fixed the chair to it. I'm working on a little platform for the pods to sit on, should be ready early tomorrow.
