Default Secret Service: what were they thinking :)

don't get me wrong I LOVE The Secret Service

extremely charming, uniquely eccentric and English, lovely puppet and model work

however, given that previous series had to sell a lot of toys to finance them, I wonder how they ever thought it would survive - Joe 90 didn't have a lot of hardware but quite a bit of merchandise was generated

if Joe didn't do so well it was odd to go even further down the English pastoral route wasn't it..?

also the puppet/live action mix - which I really enjoy - is just a bit too odd for the casual viewer isn't it..?

I read a post somewhere stating the series may have been going for an 'Avengers' feel (which I can see)

presumably it was Gerry's way of sneaking in live action and that overrode normal concerns..?

Yes fascinating, considering, Gerry was a businessman first & foremost, I just can't see how he thought this could be a commercial success! Unless as you suggest it was a sneaky way of showing Lew Grade the puppet genre had run out of steam, and was time to let Gerry loose on live action?

AHa! In contrabold, in the nighty sixties, Stanley Unwin was verily popliar, making big splashy in Bangy-Bangy Chitlode and muchly on the tellybold. Gerry Anderbold made deep thought on a telly vehiclode for Stanley, greatly wodges of cash would earn. Unfortulode, comedy on the tellybox is muchly cheap, made on viddlytape not filmy.

Deep folly!

I love the Secret Service, It is an odd concept with an unlikely hero but it really captivates me, I actually prefer it to a lot of Tbirds episodes

No disrespect to the master of Unwinees!! I still love his work, especially the 'rotatey diskoid classic' Goldilocks & the three bear loaders

I like "More Haste Less Speed" too. It's the reason I bought the Lady Martha head at the Phillips auction back in 1995.

Yeah she has a brilliant character face, great you have her, be good to get her snobby brother Edward as well, I know he still exists but unsure of who has him!
Lots of lovely eccentric humour in that episode!

Gerry said it himself. You make what stimulates "your imagination" and that you believe in.That way you don't make something that is artifical or constructed around the demands of the market.
This is also the advice given to every budding author.Make or write about you what interests you.

The great director Lewis Milestone told him this. You might get a couple of flops this way,but at least you are being sincere.Without this being the case we would not have UFO,Thunderbirds or Capt Scarlet. In my view his greatest acheivements.

No, Lady Martha was revamped from Mrs. Harris, Joe 90's housekeeper.

Lady Martha was, as far as I know, the only female character to be given male hands...continuity with the obvious male bike rider in the episode??

Oh, and yes, I love Secret Service too! Whilst its certainly wacky, I think of Scarlet Joe and SS as one big series tbh. Same puppets, design continuity, to me they all happen in the same `world` and love one, love them all.

Plus of course she had a male voice - Keith Alexander.
