Default Naked model

Like many of you, I'm inspired by the work of other modelers (like mung's in an adjacent thread) and although it's great to see the finished model, I always like to see process shots in which all the raw materials used in its construction are visible. And so I present to you my current model project in all its naked glory!

As far as the design goes, it's intended to be a deep-space planetary probeship with a detachable front section for exploring a planet or moon's surface. The ramp on the landing craft will eventually have a wheeled vehicle similar to the Apollo lunar rover, but I haven't quite worked out whether it will be an enclosed vehicle or not. There will also be antenna booms extending some distance from the main body both top and bottom, components for which have been built up as seen in the last image.

I'm not sure yet what to call this ship, so if anyone has any good ideas, I'm definitely open to suggestions.

By the way, I've finally gotten around to doing a website. I think it's a good start and am pleased with it so far. Of course I'll be adding to the gallery and process areas over time, but check it out and let me know what you think. Here's the link http://fastforwardmodels.com/

Once again some spectacular work. I am always impressed by your neatness, even naked you can't see any rough spots. I will be keen to see it clothed.

I like your website but... the gallery pictures are way too small even in enlarged mode. I for one would like to be able to fill the screen and savour the lavish detail. In my view anything smaller than 1200 pixels wide is too small these days.

Add 'education' to 'inspiration'! I always learn a lot just looking at your pictures, B.P., let alone from your text - thanks for sharing your professional experience. I've added your new site to my favourites.

The Ranger is one of my favorites from your site, has a hint of swift about it, and it had a bit of misfortune, but would make a fantastic kit, great site and one to add to my favorites as mentioned by Fun Pod

The overall look ties in really well and it all looks "of a scale". I can't wait to see the paint scheme as this is like a well dressed woman and will add more elegance.

I vote you call this model "Grace"

Thanks for all the comments (and suggestions) fellows!
Since posting the above images, I've created some additional tankage to the engine section and the model will also have a bit of girder-work holding everything together. By the way, did anyone notice the Eagle shoulder pods?

As anxious as I am to finish this one, I've (unfortunately) had to put it on the back burner for now. Priority for me is to finish up a kit I will be offering on my website and (quite likely) Starship Modeler- -proceeds from which I plan on putting towards Rogue Studios 44-inch Eagle kit. Seeing all the amazing Eagles on this site and Lee Malone's build-up at Wonderfest (which he allowed me to pick up and fondle) has finally gotten to me...

Once I've gotten the kit taken care of, I'll be back to the probeship with a vengeance!

Beautiful modelwork: absolutely wonderful. Beats me how you get everything so NEAT - microscopic attention to detail. Thanks for letting us see it.

Well placed kit bash, it's going to look amazing, you any photos of the body sections make before the parts.

I've gotten back to work on what I now call the Probeship Centauri. I still have a bit left to do on the main body of the ship, but just for fun, I decided to come up with a couple of ancillary pieces. The images show a maintenance pod and a large surface vehicle.

The maintenance pod was created from a couple of vacuform shells with the usual kit bits and castings providing the details. It will attach via magnet to a hatch on the underside of the main body of the ship. I'm probably going to replace the upper dome with a clear vacuform and put an astronaut figure inside. As you can see, it's pretty freaking tiny!

The surface vehicle was assembled from a variety of different pieces, most of which were from 1/72nd scale military kits. The challenge here was making sure it would fit inside the bay and still allow the door to close. In this case, the final look of the vehicle was very much determined by the volume I had to work within. Not entirely satisfied with the result, but I think it'll do...

Next up will be the antenna booms...

Hello fellows. I finally got some time to build the antenna booms for the probeship.

Because I had to construct two of these, I first made a Renshape block onto which I could assemble and glue the framework with Evergreen angle and strip stock. This block made it relatively easy to create two identical frames. I could have taken the easy way out and made this a more solid structure, but I really wanted a girder-type look and it wasn't nearly as painful to build as I had at first feared. Once the framework was finished, I added some kit pieces to jazz things up a bit. I was also going to incorporate magnets into these but have decided instead that I will use a high-bond double-sided tape to attach them in the final assembly. The dishes will be fixed in the position shown in the images- - really no point in making them moveable.

Not much left now- - just a couple of areas on the main body that need a bit more detail, then on to primer. I'm also giving some thought to adding some lighting to the front section and maybe the side tanks...
