Default Mobile Scale Poll

Which of the 5 figures do you feel fits with the Mobiles size?

Hopefully helpfully,
Barry

ps Assume that each figure will be 6 feet in height.

Hmm ... I'm not as intimately familiar with the dimensions of the Mobile as others here, but I'd run with 3, for this simple reason ...

... Freeman is standing, so, given that the motor bay may not be as large as it appears, allowing a lower internal floor pan, our 6 ft operator j-u-s-t fits.

Da, comrade !

Think it would have to be a 5 to fit in the control room at the back.

It's not clear if they're standing in the deeper section between the wheels. You also need to consider the other vehicles the Mobiles are transported in too. If I had to plump for any, I'm inclined to go for a mid range 3.

(edited for typo)

I think a 1 would find it a tight fit to stand in the back even if there was space between the wheels. I agree though that it would make the transporter vehicles on the large side - a bit of a case of 'It's easier for Thunderbird 3 to fit through the hole in the middle of the roundhouse than for Lew Grade to leave a special effects stage unscathed.'

My perception of the mobiles was that they were always pretty big.

Size of a Chieftain tank maybe? I'm just guessing.

Where's CR and his astronauts when you want him?

I would guess at figure 4 myself, at least for the cab. I suspect there will be no relation between the cab figures and the live set for the rear interior.

The obstacle of accurate Mobile dimensions could easily be overcome if one had another SHADO vehicle, with known dims, parked next to it. Unfortunately, although we often saw Straker's Gullwing next to a SHADO Jeep, we only ever saw the Mobiles next to the Transporters - again, dims unknown.

A SHADO vehicle profile comparison chart would be the go

Default size

I am the one that asked the question in the first place so, what do I know

After looking at (zooming in on) the black and white photos of the mobile and the farm house, the drivers do look quite small in the cab.

Next step, printing out a couple of other photos, cutting out sections and just over laying them,
I think it must be contestant number 5

But as DX said, they had to be transported around in a truck that would fit down a normal road, so a bigger person would make more sense to a proper scale.
The standard size of shipping containers on trucks (10, 20, 30 and 40 feet long) are only 8 feet wide (on the outside) and you know how big they look like when they are on a normal A road.
So, would the mobile have to be about the 8 - 9 feet wide to fit into a special truck, in the real world just to make it practical and possible?

I am still going with 5

Well, under the Special Types General Order, the width of a vehicle can be up to 2.9m without any dispensation to be on the roads. I think a SHADO Mobile looks pretty chunky and might well take advantage of the maximum allowable dimensions to operate on normal roads.

Just a thought.

Shado transporter trucks still wouldn't be anywhere near as big as Angel Aircraft crate transporter trucks though ! I think they had to have roads specially built for them !

Default Mobile

Looking at the head on photo again with the drivers in it,
The cab looks about the same width as a Transit / Sprinter size van so if you add the extra for the rest of the body and the tracks, it must take it to about the 2.9 meters or 9 ½ feet

Perhaps it is the same size as a Transit just with the 1970s’ “Carlos Fandango” wheel arch kit added on to it. (Who remembers that advert, many years ago, for the cigars?)

I think that the Johnny Express truck driver was used in the cab for the Markers Universal truck. I'll dig my figure out and post another pic sometime...

It may be best to ignore the rear quarters and get a nice fit for the cab first. Interestingly the original script has the operation being controlled from an office on the airbase.

Another thought that would resolve this quite nicely - the control room is on the plane not in the back of the Mobile. The curved roof suggests this

Hopefully helpfully

Freeman's in that pic somewhere? Huh, must've missed him whilst I was gawking at the sitting female--er looking her all over--um, we're talking about size here, right? I mean scale?

Dang it! I knew I was forgetting to get back to something on another thread! (Someone at work got fired, and I've picked up extra hours to cover his shifts... Yeah, I know I should be updating those pics instead of typing here! Don't know that they'd be much help on this particular thread, though, but thanks for the compliment, DX!)
