The fifth season of the series has been postponed so the actor can play Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company from July through November of next year...

Maybe RTD has started to recognise the amount of negative feedback in response to his casting of Catherine Tate. David Tennant isn't too bad as the Doctor but the writing hasn't been consistent enough. I've seen it suggested that RTD blew it after the end of Chris Eccleston's season (which I'm inclined to agree with).

The persistent and bloody irritating rumours fuelled by the press may also be an influencing factor, as might be the suggestions that RTD wants to do something else. If he went and Steven Moffat or Rob Shearman came in that could only be a good thing in my view.

Perhaps the BBC recognises that Doctor Who is a cash cow and doesn't want to risk its money spinning status.

Martha is coming back half way through Series 4, and is going to appear in a couple of episodes of Torchwood. If im honest Im not to keen on Catherine Tate being cast again, as I did not think alot of her in the Runaway Bride

Probably not, one guest appearance in the Christmas episode was one thing, but being in several episodes or more, I am not too sure about that truth be told, we will have to see how it goes, personally I would have preferred an entirely new character.

When Billy Piper was originally cast everyone thought that was bad but then loved her so I'm prepared to give Catherine a chance.
The biggest problem with Martha & Family is that they are just an alternate version of Rose and Family, the Doctor really needed a completely different type of companion.

I totally agree, as the whole 'I love the doctor' thing was getting abit thin, it's just there were acouple of places in the runaway bride when she made me cringe a bit, I wish her look, and hope she does well, I personally would have liked a male companion for a change, i know there was Jack, but he wasn't perminant, anyway we have Kylie first in 'Voyage Of The Damned'

Not sure if it would have worked but I always thought it would be nice to have an ex-villain as a companion, such as a battle-damaged Cyberman whos lost his killing instinct - well most of it!

have you seen the deleted seen from series 2 where the doctor says to the cyberleader 'Come lets leave you and me in the Tardis' quite funny, his point being they have no humanity and have no drive to explore, would have been funny if it had said yes, and the doctor had anew companion haha

The above report misses out there will be three Dr. Who specials in 2009 so in that context the above news it is not entirely what it seems. From my two teenage boys who follow news of Dr. Who avidly, they have pointed out this break was seemingly always planned and rumours seem to suggest that specials and/or a series linking movie [ala the X Files] has been part of the plan.

I'm no Dr. Who fan, but credit were credit is due RTD what anyone one thinks has very successfully reinvented the franchise and wrestled the series from the fan boy navel watching to a prime time family programme. My teenage boys and thier pals live for the series [my work colleagues children are the same] and are looking forward to the Catherine Tate episodes. So I'm not sure if the news of her arrival has in reality been met with dismay that has been suggested.

I was not that impressed with Torchwood, I just thought it was childishly written in places with bad language put in for the sake of it cos 'it was after the watershed', some episodes i really liked like the one with the fairies in, but sometimes it seemed like it was written by teenagers. i know lots of people love it which is fair enough, but I just felt in places it let it's self down. My opinion, please dont have a go at me

Generally I thought it was poor, I watched all the episodes but wasn't too bothered if I had missed one. Everyone in the team was a lying, two-timing miserable cheating moaning pathetic waster. And thats probably being nice!
If I was Captain Jack I would have sacked them all and got a new team - it was even making him a different character to the happy one in Doctor Who.

my thoughts were similar to yours Mark42, but it seems to have done well enough for a second series
