Default IR 23" Lab Eagle - Rework in Progress

On the other thread about the issue of the Lab Eagle I mentioned the work I would undertake to a Lab Eagle should I get one. Well I have taken the plunge and obtained one of these and today marked the start of the long list of work as follows:

1 Take it to pieces
2 Order a set of aluminium replacement bells / VTOLs / reaction control thrusters / Sensor dishes from Mike Reader
3 Strip all decals from the model
4 Rub down the model
5 Correct the pod feet length
6 Correct the CM windows
7 Repaint inside the CM
8 Add the missing diagonal engine bracing
9 Fill the undersides of the main landing gear feet to make flat
10 Correct any other details I find that need attention
11 Remove existing & drill mounts for reaction control thrusters
12 Prime & respray in Ford Diamond White
13 Add panel markings etc from reference photos
14 Add correct Alpha Crests and technical markings from Chris Trice
15 Satin coat overall
16 Mount aluminium bells
17 Sit back and look at something that's a little easier on the eye (although still not correct in some areas...)

After ordering the full set of required aluminium from Mike Reader, I spent a few hours this afternoon riping it apart (with a voice akin to No.5 from the movie 'Short Circuit' going through my head saying "No Disassemble, No Disassemble !")

Here are some pics of the 'replica' as it currently stands:

Next will be to remove the decals etc and give a gentle rub down before a light coat of primer to show up the imperfections and then making good where required.

I little construction work here and there will be required to enhance the cage sections and engine plumbing etc. I'm deciding whether to enhance this one and make alterations to depict Eagle 2 (as I already have Eagle 1 represented by the original 23" issue). If so I'll need to alter the leg pods to change the detail.

Looking forward to making some good progress on this one as I've already done it once with the first issue...so it's already going quicker than I expected.

Still trying to decide whether to commission a couple of brass spines for these as they would look so much better...

This page shows the results of my previous rework of the PE 23": http://www.eagletransporter.com/foru...p?t=339&page=3

Looking forward to completing something which will complement the previous one.

Chris

Chris, please, if there's a god, lose those damn coffins off the top of the corridors and preferably the bomb halves underneath as well.

It had crossed my mind... Think I'll take my Dremel cutting wheel to them later.

Just got to find some suitable 'greeblie' detail to replace them. I doubt whether I will manage to replicate any of the originals in this respect, but to be honest anything would be better than what's there now...

Not really - there are too many unknowns in disassembling one of these models as no two are the same - and to be perfectly honest I wouldn't want to take the risk with someone else's property.

Besides which the last one took me the best part of six months to do in the bits of available time I had.

I'm quite happy to give pointers where I can, but can't really afford the time to do these for other people right now...sorry.

Of course it will Having done one before I've attacked this one with a little more confidence.

Just got to make sure I don't break anything in the process...

No problem Chris, just thought I'd ask. I was so utterly impressed with the paint job you did on the other Eagle. Can't wait to see the result on this one. Please post pics once completed. The Lab eagle looks the best IMHO, but I'm not risking 400 quid on an IR one!

Agreed. Just pick something more in keeping and obviously not a bomb half. You could do worse than some of the Gemini pieces.

It must be Alan's eagle with all those coffins supplied. Looking at those bells in the photos dulling them down could make them usable if people couldn't afford the aluminium ones. The big trouble must be that they're the only bells that have been chromed.

It will be very exciting to watch this. Silly that it has to be done in the first place, but great that it is.

Are you going to kit bash the side of the walkways chris? or not bother. Looks a bit of a chore with that vertically corrugated surface. Why did they do that? Suppose it's the same on the RU eagle.

Yes it's exactly the same as the RU. I suppose they did it to add a little interest while avoiding the need to kitbash the area.

I've found a few bits and pieces in the spares box to embellish the sides of the corridors.

For the detail on the top I'm going to have to go out and buy a kit especially to raid for bits as my spares box is getting a bit low in stock.

I need some tank suspension bogies and the like - probably an Airfix 1:76 scale tank kit of some sort - although having said that it probably needs to be more like 1:48 to remain roughly in scale with the original model.

Any suggestions as to which kit could provide a good selection of greeblie parts ?

I may well see what I can find at this coming Saturday's Hornchurch model show, where a group of us are planning to meet up.
